MBNA woes
Previous | Next by muhgcee 31 August, 2004 - 11:36 PM

So I went to pay my MBNA bill today (loan for iPod), and noticed it was due on August 31 (that's today). So, I figured I had better pay the bill online. I went to pay online, and of course, their website is not functioning properly. So, I decide to pay by phone. There was a fucking $15 charge to pay by phone. But, it was better to pay the $15 charge than to get charged a $49 dollar late fee. Does anyone else find these fees to be ridiculous? Also, does anyone else use MBNA? What are your experiences?

it is my personal belief that our fees are what pay for 1 board member's salary. i haven't yet figured out who it is for M&T, but when i do... well, that's when the fees at M&T will go away, hehe

I sent in my last payment on my MBNA loan (central air system replacement) today. Completely painless and got a lower rate ... once I told them I was shopping around ... which was shitty, but not painful. I think I liked the experience because I submitted the request online, got a call in 15 minutes, and picked up the loan check an hour later. That's what I call speedy! Also never had a problem with them spamming me with junk mail in either snail or electronic format, so I know they didn't sell my info. The customer rep. who answered the phone so I could get a payoff amount was also quite helpful ... and a slight bit flaming ... which was kind of amusing. :)

Most of those fees are there to prevent people from using those payment methods all the time and to encourage people paying on time by sending in the payment before the day it's due. The other side of the coin is that the bank may be charged a fee to perform this service themselves, so they charge the customer the fee on an as-needed basis instead of offering it free and recouping the costs by charging you to have a checking account with them. They also have to pay the people to maintain the computer that runs the phone system and pay the people who take your calls.

I am sure it costs them less to have you pay by phone with an automated system than to actually send a check in. Also, if I could have used my check card online, it would have cost them nothing as well, and it should have posted to their account same day.

true, my opinion again is, where do you think the cost of them developing those systems gets covered? these fees seem like the most obvious choice

I would say interest should be the obvious choice, not arbitrary fees.

well, to you and me, yes, but we're not talking about rational people here
