F*ck AOL
Previous | Next by Dan 16 November, 2005 - 1:46 AM

So I launch Trillian today and there are these new people on my buddy list. Hell-o moviephone and shopbuddy.

I'm my paranoia I start running my spyware checkes and everything comes back clean. It seems AOL thinks I need some new buddies.

Fuck AOL.

I had the same thing this AM, Dan.....two new bots that AIM felt the need to add to my buddy list.....guess what was the first thing I did on trillian this morning? deleted the two new buddies.... If I wanted to look up movie times or do some shopping, guess what? I'd search on my own. Fuck off, AOL.

What a good reason to use Jabber.

11/16/2005 >> Dan

Jabber is all fine and stuff but I would think that it is just as vulnerable to AOL deciding to add new buddies to your buddy list.

11/16/2005 >> muhgcee

jabber is merely a protocol whereas aim is a program that you have to use AOL's servers with. So, you use your own server or someone else's server . . . if they start mucking around with your account, just switch servers.

Oh, and since when have we been censoring our posts on this site? F*ck?

11/16/2005 >> ralph

yeah, i agree with dan on this one. AOL stores the buddy lists on their servers, and they just added these two bots to everyone's lists. I bet you still get them with jabber.

11/16/2005 >> muhgcee

List of Jabber servers, many of which are available under the GPL.

11/16/2005 >> muhgcee

jabber != aim
What you said is like saying AOL's changes are going to affect your gmail account.

11/16/2005 >> muhgcee

related article on /.

11/16/2005 >> ralph

muhgcee, i apologize.....i assumed jabber was another 'trillian'. didn't realized it was a completely decentralized IM protocol.......

11/16/2005 >> ralph

anyone else relalize that this site's starting to see more postings? about fucking time.

11/16/2005 >> muhgcee

yeah really . . . now we just need that guy Ben to post more ;-)

11/16/2005 >> muhgcee

wow, and 9 different authors in the last 20 posts.

11/16/2005 >> muhgcee

btw, buddies didn't show up on my list. Do you use the default "buddies" group? That might be it . . . probably not related to the client though.

11/16/2005 >> mffree

I just like it cuz ya'lls some smart bitches. yay for learning.

11/16/2005 >> ralph

mmffree....don't let that get out....I like people to think i'm a dumb mf'er....then surprise them every know and then.

muhgcee, they threw them in their own group...called something like "AIM bots" or the like.

11/16/2005 >> mffree

why ya gots ta dis me playa with the xtra m in tha name.

today is ghetto speak day at work guys get it too.

11/16/2005 >> muhgcee

Hahaha from Boing Boing:
AOL inserts some new uninvited bots into buddy lists
Boing Boing reader Luke says,

AIM just automatically added a couple of bots to everybodys buddy list. I had a weird conversation with the MovieFone bot.

(11:51:07) me: i will crush you
(11:51:07) MovieFone: Excellent.

11/22/2005 >> elfie

I got them added to my list, which I promptly deleted. Not really a big deal. I seem to remember that they used to automatically add a helper bot to your buddy list when you first joined.

11/22/2005 >> muhgcee

This thread was so several days ago. :-P
