HOLY POOP! V5!
Previous | Next by elfie 02 August, 2006 - 10:24 AM

FIRST POST! :-D

8/2/2006 >> ralph

So, do we get V5 today, or next week?

8/2/2006 >> elfie

oh okay, so THIS is v3 and it's v4 that we're skipping over to get to v5? I'm so confused, but WOOOOOOO UPDATE!

8/2/2006 >> ben

yes yes... remember, we were working on V4 at artifact, then .Net 2.0 came out and we upgraded!

8/2/2006 >> elfie

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight that sounds familiar. I think.

8/2/2006 >> ben

ain't it pretty? and my flickr badge works!

8/2/2006 >> elfie

but my edit profile button is the broken :(

8/2/2006 >> ben

hrm... i'll fix that soon... have to get home now

8/2/2006 >> ben

notice that the jump to comment button works though! yay!

8/2/2006 >> elfie

yes but I still want my edit profile button. I worked so hard on that section :p

8/2/2006 >> muhgcee

Noooooo! My fourmajor.com button! It's goooone!

8/2/2006 >> elfie

so be VERY certain of what you post... I can't seem to edit this one

I can edit my comments though

but I have to manually put in line breaks

8/2/2006 >> ralph

Awesome, ben. good job. I had a feeling it was up when my toolbar links to index.asp didn't work anymore.

Looks great. I'll play around in a bit.

8/2/2006 >> muhgcee

Ben, you need an icon of your own.

8/2/2006 >> pyrex

YAY, it doesn't quite look as I remember designing it and there's some work to be done but um.. whee!!

8/3/2006 >> elfie

I notice that the RSS does not seem to be the working...

8/3/2006 >> ben

it has been moved to here - and it's version 2.0 (i don't remember doing that). should still work

8/3/2006 >> ben

i'll get to hiding the edit/delete buttons on comments if you shouldn't see them - at least they don't do anything if you don't have access..

line breaks don't work anymore? i guess not...

8/3/2006 >> ben

so here's a question... why did the linkomatic and comment minimize functions start working again? i know i wrote the code, but that wasn't working yesterday, and now it remembers when i tell it to stay minimized...

weird

8/3/2006 >> elfie

okay cool. post editing works now.... but for comments, I seem to have TWO edit and delete buttons per comment... and only one of each is active

8/3/2006 >> elfie

oh and as for minimize functions and remembering their settings.... is that machine based or user based? I want to request a minimize for your flickr thing since I can't view flickr from work, but I wouldn't want it minimized from home since it DOES work from there... but in general I think it's a better practice to make something like that user-based... so....... yeah :) which is it? and either way, I think you should expand the functionality to the flickr thing... unless they're paying you for ad space

8/3/2006 >> ben

that's a good point, i forgot that websense is stupid and blocks that...

it's in the database remember, stored as a preference, so it's user based/machine independant...

i am getting free advertising for my pictures... that is all

8/3/2006 >> elfie

so... how come all your old comments are poof gone byebye? I think your import script did not work....

8/3/2006 >> rich

I no longer get to recommend the new book I read every two years. sniff, there goes some income down the drain.

;-)

8/3/2006 >> ben

sorry about that...
and yes, i'm still working on the comments thing...

8/3/2006 >> elfie

speaking for the masses, if you have to redo the export to the new DB, I don't think we'll be TOO sad to lose this one post and related comments.

8/3/2006 >> ben

that was my worry. the buttons are working now... i'll fix more things and have a service pack released tonight, hehe

8/3/2006 >> elfie

which buttons are working? cause I still can't edit posts... and none of the link, image, bold, italics buttons for comments work.... AND :-D the "new" image on the home page next to threads with new comments is incorrectly sized.

I know you love me :-D

8/3/2006 >> elfie

so... slow day at the office, I hope? ;-)

8/3/2006 >> ben

not really, no...

the working edit/delete buttons will go up before i go home today... do you want the code?

8/3/2006 >> ben

permissions are being funky too...

8/3/2006 >> elfie

no, I'm out of comission all weekend. OTAKON! UNTZ UNTZ! :-D But ummmm good luck!

8/3/2006 >> Dark_Knight

Nice job

8/3/2006 >> ben

so, i screwed one thing up... didn't do the identity insert with the comments... whoops...

but there are 98 comments from the old system that don't match up with posts that are still around...

8/3/2006 >> elfie

ok well THOSE can probably go :)

8/3/2006 >> mffree

Beautiful

8/3/2006 >> mffree

aw man i cant edit my junx...customizable is not for me.

8/4/2006 >> ben

yeah, working on the profile stuff... i wanted to get the core functionality up so people would stop complaining about the old design...

8/4/2006 >> muhgcee

Hah now we just complain about the new design...

You don't understand, Ben, we're never going to stop complaining.

8/4/2006 >> ben

oh you will... once i turn off comments, hehehehe

8/7/2006 >> elfie

so how are fixes coming? Maybe we should start a "V5 bugs" thread to use JUST for bug listing so you can have them all in one place and we won't be repeating each other?

8/7/2006 >> ben

i think this IS the V5 bugs thread, hehe

8/7/2006 >> elfie

alright then:

I love that when a new topic is started, it shows up on the "recent" list even if there are zero comments... which is why I coded it that way ;-) but I notice that I don't get a sexy little "new" icon next to it indicating that I haven't read it yet... I want a sexy icon

8/7/2006 >> ralph

I'd still like a seach function.

8/7/2006 >> elfie

I'd also still like to see the return of the comments that were lost in the upgrade. you could still do a script like the one we discussed, but adding a WHERE NOT IN (stuff that's already in the new DB) kind of clause so you wouldn't have to lose the updates that have happened since the export.

8/7/2006 >> muhgcee

I want a pony. You promised me a pony with v5.

8/7/2006 >> elfie

and more breasts

8/7/2006 >> muhgcee

Yeah. I forgot about that one.

Ben, change the "new comment" icon to a pair of bouncing boobies. Just a little one.

8/7/2006 >> ralph

sugartits!

8/7/2006 >> ben

searching would require some full text indexing in the database... don't know if that's available here... i'll check

8/7/2006 >> muhgcee

Oh, and you should let us change our password.

8/7/2006 >> elfie

yay for corrected login functionality! yay for correctly sized new icons! yay for um um. what else did you do? YAY for pickles!

I still vote a re-import of comments as the next update, but that's just me :p

8/7/2006 >> elfie

oh... and I want auto line-breaks in comments.

8/7/2006 >> ben

line breaks in comments and edit profile are next up...

8/7/2006 >> elfie

so... maybe I'm crazy, but the "keep me logged in" seems to be not the working now

8/7/2006 >> elfie

I also request the ability to ajaxily change the size of the recent comments and link-o-matic boxes... and for the "add a link" button to work

8/8/2006 >> muhgcee

Holy crap. 51 52 comments. Haven't seen that in a while.

8/8/2006 >> ben

um... change the size, or minimize/restore? because that part IS ajaxy...

and the add a link button will work as soon as i figure out if it should pop a window like the old way, or redirect, or just open a div

8/8/2006 >> elfie

I mean change the size... like to show more or less items in it.

and I vote add a link to open a div. that's the Web 2.0 way to do it :-D

btw, I notice that just now I didn't have to log in again... did you fix it?

8/8/2006 >> elfie

I take it back, it's still logging me out. Did you accidentally put like a 20-minute time limit on the "keep me logged in" cookie? I thought I remembered the window being like 2 months when I was looking at the code.

8/8/2006 >> ben

2 weeks, it's supposed to be... i don't know why the cookie is expiring... i'll look into that too...

8/8/2006 >> ben

ok, bang on it a bit for now... play with some of the changes, ;)

8/8/2006 >> elfie

Are you going to tell us what you changed? :p

8/8/2006 >> ben

added Edit Profile, comments should be fixed, fixed the login issue (i think), and the whole Encode/Decode thing for intros

8/8/2006 >> ben

have to fix the home page though - line breaks aren't showing up there now

8/8/2006 >> jay

Error found! I use the google home page (google.com/ig) and when hitting a topic via the rss feed, I get this

Server Error in '/' Application.

8/8/2006 >> jay

And since I can't find the Edit button ???

The url the rss sends me to is http://www.easilyamusing.com/Comments.aspx?ID=3166

8/8/2006 >> jay

And now for the astounding triple post!
Works fine if I go to http://www.damnthatscool.com/Comments.aspx?ID=3166 but alas, the RSS feed does not point to said URL.

8/8/2006 >> ben

yeah, i need to point to dtc instead of ea... whoops

8/8/2006 >> ben

fixed now

8/8/2006 >> elfie

the login issue does not seem to be fixed. I'm still getting bumped

8/8/2006 >> ralph

me too....quite annoying, actually.

8/8/2006 >> muhgcee

DAMN IT BEN. I PAY GOOD MONEY FOR MY MEMBERSHIP TO THIS SITE. FIX MY CAPS LOCK KEY, TOO.

8/8/2006 >> ben

something is clogging the tubes... the cookies are getting stolen!

8/9/2006 >> elfie

So without looking at the code, I can tell you where the problem is... it looks like the system remembers to keep you logged in ONCE, but forgets on all subsequent visits... which means that your actual login code sets the cookies correctly, but the "ah, I see you're already logged in" code is borked.

8/9/2006 >> ben

i think it has something to do with the session - the cookies are still there, but when a new ASPNET session cookie gets put in, the other cookies are set to ""

interestingly enough... when i hit the site just now, i was still logged in...

8/9/2006 >> elfie

probably because the previous time you were here, you logged in... like I said, it works once, then fails after that. don't forget to set me up with the code before you leave :)

8/9/2006 >> muhgcee

Oh, the "login" button should be a "log in" button.

8/10/2006 >> elfie

So, I know what's wrong with the "keep me logged in" but I don't have ftp access from work, so it'll have to wait until I get home...

8/10/2006 >> muhgcee

elfie, you are our (potential) hero.

8/10/2006 >> elfie

"Keep me logged in" is fixed....

at least it passed my quicktest. let me know if you still experience problems with it.

Ben, FYI: the problem was that when you were resetting the timeout on the "keep me logged in" cookies upon subsequent visits, you were not resetting the VALUE of the cookies. so the first time someone returned and the cookie was there, it was immediately blanked out

8/11/2006 >> elfie

alright, I fixed the crazy extra line breaks on posts. If you didn't notice, we had double line breaks on archived V3 posts and NO line breaks on the home page for V5 posts. this has been correcticated

8/11/2006 >> elfie

the next thing that I really want to fix is that the "new" icon doesn't show next to posts you have NEVER read... only those that you have read once and have new messages since then.

is there anything else that's currently broken? not features that are lacking, but ones that don't work as they should?

8/11/2006 >> muhgcee

I can't think of anything else that is broken...

8/11/2006 >> elfie

so... then I'm your hero, right? ;-)

8/11/2006 >> muhgcee

Yay! All hail elfie!

8/14/2006 >> ralph

the "link", "image", "bold" and "italics" links don't work in FF. Ben, I thought you were going to fix that?

8/14/2006 >> ralph

or in IE7.

8/14/2006 >> ralph

or in Opera. I'm thinking that they just don't work.

8/14/2006 >> ben

yeah, none of those were created... they ended up pretty low on the todo list... sorry
