i guess we're coming around to that point again... the attitude of the site; our site, yours, mine, the site of all the lurkers and the people who haven't been here yet.
over the last year, since i've opened it up to public posting, i've maintained the attitude that you come here to talk about whatever is on your mind. link to news, cool errata of the web, little things that have happened in your day that make you go "hrm?" and maybe raise an eyebrow. even short stories, poems, whatever.

How not to import anthrax.
I don't know whether to be concerned (and wonder what's up with our "terror threat alert system"), or to think that, if all the terrorists' mules are that stupid, we have little to fear. It's a good thing that Iraq and its neighbors didn't actually have any stores of anthrax, so all we have to worry about are the naturally occurring suitcases full of it.

so today, at long last, i was able to code a new function into a page, i didn't have to look for old code to figure out how to work it out or find the function names i was looking for...
it's still faster to do it the other way, but it's gratifying to know that you can write a page without having the old code as a crutch.

Meetup is a service that facilitates the effort of people in a certain geographical area and with a particular interest to hook up as a group. The top 10 groups for Baltimore are interesting, but, since I'm not really from the area, I'm not quite sure how to interpret it. For instance, why the disproportional showing in the Witches and Pagan groups? Something as simple as an intersection of the sets of social Internet users and the religiously rebellious, or does it indicate something about the area?
Given that I've heard one of Baltimore's slogans is "the City That Reads", it's nice to see the Bookcrossing (literary catch and release program) group having a high membership.

There's no other reason why they should play fourteen of her songs in a row on the easy listening station.

This topic is something that really scares me (and I don't scare too easily - with the exception of Stephen King movies).

pyrex and i were just talking about this... does anyone have any resources about the similarities between the war of the roses and the civil war?
wars where the unlanded were the combatants, staggeringly large numbers of deaths, fighting for control... many more ideas... anyone? bueller? bueller?

interesting place they've put themselves in, these pop-up vigilante companies. kind of like people who let termites loose in a bug-free neighborhood and then put on their Terminix hat.

Does anyone ever go to the chatchat link? I was curious how it worked. Is it a regular real-time chat client?

From http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/04/06/prison.population.ap/index.html: "About 12 percent of all black males in the United States between the ages 20 and 39 were in prison or jail, by far the highest single group. In contrast, 4 percent of Hispanic males and 1.6 percent of white males in that age group were incarcerated." That sickens me . . .

Talking to Rich about houses and the ages of our respective houses made me remember the odd past this one has. It's haunted. And the evidence is quite convincing.

I know of a student at my school and he's openly gay (which at my school is a brave thing to be because my school is so incredibly homophobic it scares me) and he tells me that he's scared to go home because there are boys on the next block over that want to beat him up. I tell him he's protected by federal and state law that says that beating up anyone of color, sexuality, gender etc, will land those boys in jail. But still...he's petrified. I call him a cab, give him money and send him home and tell him to see if he can't leave the city (it's only him and his grandmother...the rest of his family is in NYC). I'm scared for him. This is a sweet kid, who's only 15 and he's got to be worried about having the shit kicked out of him every time he goes home. I guess this also touches on a much broader idea in that why are these boys (who are not much older than he) so scared of him? Are they afraid that if he touches them they'll turn "gay"? I mean, give me a break. And this self aware young man (his parents know and they're fine with it) has to live in fear of his life every day. And while the African American community has been historically homophobic, does it not mean that the community cannot embrace differences? Is it because the African American community has also been historically religious as well? I have no clue, but I worry for him. No one should have to fear for their life, especially at such a young age.

Well, I'm glad to see that XM radio is *finally* on it's way back up. I bought some stock in it last January (2002, at it's peak) and so far it's dropped from 15 to 2 and is now heading back up and at the 6.50 mark. For those of you who don't know about XM, check out XM Radio Website.

Anyone want to go to the Orioles game on Friday at 7? I've got 2 tickets available lower left field section. Biff and I are going. $25 each (no profit being made here) and you'll have to meet me at Camden Yards before the game because they are at will call. So yeah I am not afraid of strangers and if $25 is too much well then make me an offer and I will probably accept because losing money is better than losing more money. And don't say you'll go and then not show up, that'd be bad. Add to the comments or email me.

yo. oy. bennie. where'd you put my car keys? I'm not stranded (got the spares from ry before he took off) but i may need them...you know what? nevermind. if i ever lock myself out of my car, leave it at the airport to be picked up, or get piss drunk and fall down, you're the guy i'm callin' anyway. reliable. that's you. so keep the keys in good health. and make sure your phone is on.
