Secure Cart/Javascript training
by beezers at 28 April, 2006 - 3:59 AM
My company is having me redesign their site and they're interested in having a secure user-centered area where you can shop and check your account and all that what...

and they're offering to pay for me to get training in order to do that... *i'm already down with HTML, XML, CSS, teeny bits of JavaScript, but not that skilled yet*...

question: what exactly do I need to learn for all of that? More intensive Javascripting? PHP?

And next, can you suggest anywhere for training? I've checked W3Schools and yeah, I love it, but I also don't have time to take courses at work/will do better in a classroom setting.

Thanks in advance for any saucy input!

Verizon Wireless and Google Calendar
by ralph at 27 April, 2006 - 4:04 AM
I don't know about most of you, but in the past few weeks, I've been using Google Calendar quite a bit. I was pretty excited when I saw that they offered SMS reminders to your events and appointments, but was pissed when Verizon Wireless wasn't in the list of carriers.

Well, after a little digging around today, I found that you CAN, in fact receive SMS notifications even if your carrier is Verizon. All you have to do is choose T-Mobile in the drop-down list. Problem solved and messages are coming in nicely.

Definition of Civil War
by muhgcee at 25 April, 2006 - 1:42 AM
The definition of civil war is not very well...defined. It is pretty obvious, to me at least, that it is a political question when one asks, "Is Iraq in a civil war?"

So, after seeing this article in today's New York Times, I ask you, the distinguished readers of Easily Amusing:

If 40 or so Americans were found murdered once every two weeks, would you say America is in a civil war?

Quickie Review of Guild Wars
by elfie at 23 April, 2006 - 11:15 PM
So per muhgcee's request, here's my first impressions review of Guild Wars at way-too-sleepy-in-the-morning o'clock. Right now, I have three characters that I'm relatively happy with: a Ranger/Monk, an Elementalist/Mesmer, and a Warrior/Necromancer. The last of those is the only one still in the pre-game, whereas the first two have a couple (like 2 or 3) hours each in the "real game."

What's Sexy in Video Cards Today?
by elfie at 20 April, 2006 - 12:36 AM
So after a couple of nights (and mornings) of Guild Wars, we have concluded that Pie is in the market for a new video card, because the game looks way prettier on my machine than on hers. She only has AGP available and doesn't currently use multiple monitors, but we'd like to keep that option open. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking a RAM upgrade might be needed too, as she's currently only got 768MB.

John Constantine, Hellblazer - Continuity
by elfie at 19 April, 2006 - 5:29 AM
So my Infinite Crises site actually became pretty popular on a bunch of comics-related message boards (only 1/4 of which were discussions I personally initiated! ;-)), which got me thinking I should maybe continue the theme.

This time I chose John Constantine as my subject, so here's a chronological list of trades featuring John Constantine, Hellblazer. I think a few people here might care a little more about this one than the Infinite Crisis one since there was a movie about it and all :p Plus Ben reads Lucifer and Constantine was in an issue of Lcuifer once... and stuff ;)

Wireless - Only When Needed?
by elfie at 18 April, 2006 - 11:18 PM
So, I just feel like this button MUST exist somewhere, though I can't seem to find it. Is there an easy way to tell Windows to only use the wireless connection if a wired connection is unavailable? Or am I pretty much stuck disabling/enabling the wireless manually in order to keep it from (seemingly randomly) switching over to using the wireless even though the wired connection is up and running?

Wireless PS2...
by ralph at 17 April, 2006 - 3:52 AM
Kind of related to Elfie's post, kind of not....

Does anyone here have a wireless controller for the PS2 that they like? I'm in the market for one, and would like some feedback from people that already have them...

Thanks!

MMORPGWTFBBQ
by elfie at 16 April, 2006 - 11:04 PM
So Pie and I had fun for a while playing Urban Dead until all of our characters leveled up as high as they could go. And over the last couple days, we've both been playing a lot of Adventure Quest. This, compounded with our enjoyment for watching each other play Dragon Quest VIII, has led me to the theory that we might actually enjoy playing an MMORPG of some sort together.

contact management
by muhgcee at 13 April, 2006 - 8:15 PM
What do you use for contact (addresses and phone numbers, not the vision correcting things) management?

I am looking for something that will fall into one of these two requirements:
- Some portable application that I can stick on my USB drive. Preferably with support for OSes other than Windows, but this is not a deal breaker.
- A web-based app that I can install on my server at home. I run Unix servers in my closet...so I don't want to install Exchange and do Outlook Web Access just for this.

Also, I would like something that is compatible with some sort of standard...either an open standard or able to export to a pst file at some point.

I've searched a bit and can't find anything...what do you all use to manage your contacts? Or am I am going to have to revert to *gasp* paper and pencil?

I am a victim of identity theft.
by rich at 13 April, 2006 - 11:06 AM
I really don't want to get into the whole thing here. However I was filling out some forms to dispute some things and I ran into this gem.

The consumer may send to us a brief statement, not to exceed 100 words (200 words for Maine residents) explaining the nature of your disagreement. Please note that the information that you enter in your consumer statement will appear on your credit report and will be made available to potential creditors. The consumer statement should not be used to dispute credit file information as it may delay the processing of your dispute. In addition, we reserve the right to edit your statement.

Apparently Maine inhabitants are legally allowed to be more verbose. I will put that into my list of things the next time I compare and contrast what state I want to live in.

Wireless USB
by elfie at 10 April, 2006 - 9:04 AM
Does such a thing exist? I don't mean wireless networking via USB. I mean a USB hub (again, not networking) that is not physically attached to the computer, but is instead connected via some sort of radio transmitter or bluetooth or something and plugs into the wall for power. Something where you could plug a USB device into a computer that is on the other side of the room. Am I making any sense? Does this exist?

well, looks like the court case has wrapped up finally. i don't see how it could still go on, really - he was famous on the web for a while, and had to deal with his classmates, but seriously, if he had just changed schools when it first happened, wouldn't that maybe have lessened the problem?

The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster

The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is now in print and available for purchase at fine book stores everywhere. I haven't read the whole thing yet, but what I have read has been fantastic.
