This Post Brought To You by: Friends
by ben at 26 December, 2006 - 6:48 AM
I don't know if any of you 'naughts are socially minded, or really care about structures of society and where they take us, but I'm always interested. To that end, my question today deals with subjects brought up (either obliquely or directly) by John and Lauren... and discussed with many friends.

Videos from Gogol Bordello Show
by ben at 21 December, 2006 - 6:38 AM
Yep, i took me some videos at the show, and put them up today...

the opening act - he's standing on the speaker stack - it's kind of dark at first, and it cut out before he jumped down, but you can kind of see that he's WAY up there... we took odds on how badly he'd hurt himself, but he's a rocker...
the end of the opening act's show - now he's got the whole center of the room sitting down, and he's riling them up... pretty good show really.
the beginning of gogol bordello - Eugene Hutz explains the background of the song that just begins here (can't remember the name at them moment, damnit)
the beginning of the encore - seriously, these guys put the best encore on EVER
towards the end of the encore - Pamela Racine beating on the drum, on the crowd... they have blown the hell out of the speakers at this point... killer... just killer

anywho, enjoy!

OMGWTFWWMTVD?
by elfie at 20 December, 2006 - 12:10 AM
Okay, I love this song, just for the record.

Gay Bar, by Electric Six. The above video is recorded from MTV2, you know, the one that actually played videos for a while before they turned into a duplicate of MTV, which also used to play videos before they turned into the game show network?

Anyway........ point being, we seem to have reached a point in our society where we are now censoring the word "war" on television. If you want to jump right to it, go to the 35 second mark on that video. The line is supposed to be "Let's start a war. Start a nuclear war." In this video, as aired on MTV2, the line is "Let's start a CLAP. Start a CLAPPITY CLAP."

What. The. Fuck?

At least we don't seem to have a problem with a dozen Abe Lincolns in thongs having a gay orgy.

My first mix!
by ben at 18 December, 2006 - 11:46 PM
Tim came over to family dinner with John & Clarissa last night, and did me a huge solid, and recorded a mix for me... that is, I did the mix, he did the recording...

If it's not total shite, I'll put it up here and let the crowd have it... that is, anyone who wants to hear a fledgling DJ spin house for an hour... and not necessarily well.

Dude, that's sweet... hehehe

Top Notch Tier One Support
by ben at 15 December, 2006 - 5:32 AM
So, I was hired to this company to build a website that would act as a link between back end builder systems and the company's web application that they license to builders. I've finished the web interface, the whole app itself, except for the part that connects between the back end system and the site.
That's the part I've been working on this week. I got around to the testing part of it, and every time, got errors. I sent and email off to the API help desk (they apparently have enough issues with developers that they've generated an entire department for this), and received this as my reply:

"API was never designed for web application so it will not work."

I think we should have asked that question first...

Cthulu Fhtagn!
by ben at 15 December, 2006 - 12:36 AM
I’ll admit, things in my head are generally pretty surreal, or at least a little off kilter. This is how I remain serene. But there’s just something a little… over my head about sipping tea and listening to Call of Cthulu while watching the sun rise, and seeing the fog roll in over the grass of the park.

At times, Baltimore can seem quite otherworldly.

The Evils of Harry Potter
by elfie at 13 December, 2006 - 3:10 AM
banning Harry Potter from schools because it teaches children to be Pagan

I know that's only the one million and first article of its kind. You've probably seen hundreds of them. I think I've become so desensitized to insanity like this that it doesn't faze me anymore. But for some reason this just struck me today. Maybe it's because I haven't had my coffee yet. But what the fuck is wrong with people?

Why are so many Americans so TERRIFIED of anyone who thinks differently than them, or even worse that their children might be influenced by these ideas and grow up to become actual human beings?

I overheard a conversation in an EBStop the other day. Two parents were discussing the new gaming system options with the clerk:

Clerk: .... something something about the Wii and innovative gameplay ....
Mom: "I heard the 'why' is made by Japanese people. That's why it's so strange. We don't need that in our house. We'll get the 'P3.'"
Clerk: "Um, the PS3 is made by Japanese people too."
Mom: (looking at Dad) "Oh. Really? Well." (trails off... speaking caveman speak of some sort)
Dad: (mildly retarded and does not say anything)
Me: (head explodes)

In other news, second gun-related incident in the same school in 3 months.

Shameless plug - KeePass
by rich at 12 December, 2006 - 2:32 AM
KeePass is a windows program that is basically a highly encrypted database for keeping credentials. There are recent ports to OSX/Linux and Pocket PC.

Keepass is my killer app. I have been using it for about a year and a half. Let me extol its virtues.

- Open Source
- Small, simple, no install needed, just run
- Pocket PC mini version that you can automatically sync your desktop to
- Fun cryptography/security items such as two factor auth options (password plus key file) and random entropy gathering password generation
- Copy, paste, then clear clip board options with simple commands.

How To Get Gigs without actually Playing
by ben at 11 December, 2006 - 2:50 AM
since all the news that's fit has already been reported elsewhere, and i'm actually not too interested in any of it today anyway, i'll regale you with the story of my sunday night. Normally (at least, twice now) on the odd Sunday nights, i'll be spinning at Joe Squared. However, the manager informed me (once i got there, not before, because she happened to have dropped her cell phone in the toilet. which seems a little hard to do, to me, but, i also try not to talk on the phone in the bathroom...) that they were doing a little winter cleaning, and had broken down the DJ equipment, many apologies, but no spinning tonight.

Le Cercle Rouge
by ben at 08 December, 2006 - 2:35 AM
I just went to see this movie last night at the BMA for their free Thursday thing... and it was awesome... that movie was one of the best gangster/jewel heist/make you think movies I've seen in a long time. And it's definitely a departure from the older, expressionist French films I'd seen before... I guess this genre was called "new wave" there, i'm not sure... but it was awesome, and I highly recommend it. Especially the bar scenes... man, the 60s was the BEST decade of all time...

by ben at 06 December, 2006 - 7:38 AM
a little short web roundup of sorts... from Pete, i got Prager being told to screw off by the Holocaust Museum, whereupon I found the trucker pundit who pointed me to an article about Lynne Cheney being pregnant... where the 2nd article is even better than the first! Bad WJZ, BAD! The trucker pundit reminds me of Jesus' General, who's awesome, but not as awesome as potus.

In other news, Mike came up with the idea that we should have an "easily amused" effect... where we pick a link and all of us just keep hitting refresh on that link... we may be a LOT LOT LOT LOT LOT smaller than digg or slashdot, but hey, we can make up for quantity with quality, right?

RIGHT?

New years eve
by n0manarmy at 06 December, 2006 - 12:04 AM
What's everyone doing for new years? I've got a couple ideas but from what I hear, the bars in Baltimore are completely different, as in most charge a flat fee for all you can eat and drink style entry and limit the amount of people. So the girl and I might go to a cabin with some friends but I want to hear what everyone else is planning just in case.
