many of you have known me since before i had my sidekick... and may not be aware that since i lost it last summer, i can no longer receive calls on that number... so for any one of you who have my 443-857-6728 number (i think?), that is my old cell number... call me at my apartment number, or email me and i'll give you my new one. to sweeten the deal, i'll tell you that the 7th, 8th and 9th numbers add up to equal the 10th number... ain't that sweet?

oh, also, if you're like and don't get cell service at your house, so you maintain a home line, they don't make you dial 1 before 443 anymore... also sweet.

Social Security
by Casey at 26 February, 2004 - 12:42 PM
So it looks like the republican agenda to dissolve social security is coming together. I don't mind that much except that if I don't get paid back for the social security wages I've paid, I'm going to join a class action lawsuit vs the government. I'm sure there will be plenty to choose from.

Christ that was bad!
by Mark at 25 February, 2004 - 10:25 PM
G'day!

Just saw Mel Gibson's latest. I was intrigued when I heard the entire film was in Aramaic and Latin with subtitles, so I went to check it out hoping for some objective history. But alas. Hollywood strikes again. Old Mel crammed about as much blood and gore into it as he could. The whole film is pure pain, emotion and blood with almost no historical or philosophical value at all. It also only covers a small fraction of the life of J.

The film has picked up allot of initial momentum thanks to the jewish community claiming it is anti-semitic. Predictably a focus group stripped out most controversial scenes. And we're left with a film that is going to fade fast as soon as word of mouth starts working its magic.

Titanic America
by rich at 25 February, 2004 - 11:45 AM
This is a good article highlighting the problems with fiscal irresponsibility in Washington. A stat that, while unsupprising, still shocked me:
In 1940, there were 4 million Americans working for the government and 11 million working in manufacturing. Today, there are 7 million more Americans working for the government (21.5 million) than in all manufacturing industries (14.5 million).

"Well ... And so it now begins. My more liberal friends told me a day like this would come, and now I am forced to eat crow. Words cannot express the hurt and anger I feel for the man's blatant constitutional and moral attack on a segment of our population. And for the still wobbly among us, make no mistake ... this is an attack... I realized long ago I am (was) a Republican solely for foreign affairs. But that's not good enough anymore.

by C Mo at 25 February, 2004 - 6:28 AM
I can't tell you how many times I've seen rats and wanted to make them into organic balloons or how many times I've stared at an expanse of water and wished I could ride across it on a dead pig(with an outboard motor attached).

This guy did it, and he rocks. Perhaps a little disturbed, and yes the newspaper is poorly translated, but awesome nonetheless.

Due to my unemployed persons sleep schedule, I was up at 4 a.m. this morning. Craig comes home from his girlfriend's and engages me in a debate regarding the heralds of sleeping for 3 hours before work or just staying up and pulling straight through. It is determined that a continuance of the awake state is the correct course of action. Also resolved during our deliberations was the need to procure sustenance via an open dinning establishment.

by rich at 23 February, 2004 - 10:12 AM
Ok I went and looked at the 1.5 Megs of LOG for TODAY at the download.damnthatscool.com site. This site hosts one file Hey Yah Charlie Brown.
I did a little math and it looks like we are getting 8 requests a minute for this 8odd Meg file. Continuing with my math, and therefore probably disastrously wrong, I calculate that the tekkiehaus would need five and a half T-1s to keep up with this demand. Alas, we only have one. I command you, my minions to go forth and find me mirrors. I shall then post something informative on the 403 busy page for all of the poor lost souls that just want to watch a cool little video.

conversational spectrum limitations
by adrienne at 23 February, 2004 - 5:41 AM
I have only met a few people here, but they've spawned an entirely un-weather-related observation: people here cannot talk politics with one another. They don't even try. Republicans don't talk with other republicans because they're afraid of just how liberal things can get in their own party, and they don't talk to democrats because they might get cooties. Dems have the same issue, only replace 'liberal' with 'Christian', and 'cooties' with 'stoopid'.

lucky for me, i didn't remember that i put the laser monks in the link-o-matic a while back, but did remember that i have pricewatch.com on the links page (under "best prices ever")... i was looking for deskjet 612c refills today, and pricewatch had a listing to ink something or other.com for 14 + shipping. laser monks, while usually very cheap (in fact cheaper than anything i found on google), was still 18 bucks... whew. but still, they're good prices for what they are. anywho... just thought i'd share my lesson, check pricewatch first.

and yes, for those of you who opine without checking first, pricewatch has listings from newegg and others, grin

Gay Sex, Drug Decriminalization, and Libertarianism
by Casey at 13 February, 2004 - 3:30 AM
The link goes to a nifty article on Justice Kennedy's decision on the recent Texas gay sex case. It specifically brings up an extremely elegant concept. Essentially it is an articulation of a constitutional basis for a "presumption of liberty".

Justice Kennedy is employing here what I have called a ''presumption of liberty'' that requires the government to justify its restriction on liberty, instead of requiring the citizen to establish that the liberty being exercised is somehow ''fundamental.'' In this way, once an action is deemed to be a proper exercise of liberty (as opposed to license), the burden shifts to the government

by chuk at 12 February, 2004 - 5:13 AM
Ok, now granted I don't have someone who cleans their nose, ears, and whatnot in my office that I have to deal with, but I -do- have to deal with complete fucking morons on the phone...

I got hired blind to do Linux support for a company 8 months ago, and it's not a bad job, but the fact I'm supporting Linux systems to complete fucking MORONS is what drives me to drink when I get home (and what's your excuse Ben?)

of course i saw it on the west wing
by ben at 11 February, 2004 - 5:21 PM
tonight's west wing was, as always, really really good. i didn't so much worry about some of the storylines, but the one i liked the most (they always have at least 3, usually with bits and pieces of other storylines/characters being developed) was about a group from NASA coming to meet with the deputy COS to ask for funding. he blows them off, because, as he says, the only time they make headlines now is when they screw up.

I've noticed that many of you have been posting links to really old news (which to me is anything I've already read more than a week ago). I would encorage you all to become regular patrons of two blog ranking sites, blogdex and daypop. Hit the FAQs, click around, get the clue.

by muhgcee at 11 February, 2004 - 9:04 AM
I am not sure whether this is a valid argument or merely a conspiracy theory. But, according to this guy, we are all going to die once we run out of inexpensive oil. I guess my take on his article is that he has many valid points but he assumes the worst about almost every one of these points. What do you all think?
Warning: This is a long read.

70s child early 80s boy
by ben at 11 February, 2004 - 6:47 AM
couple of things...

if you're in baltimore, and like buying cds... here's a coupon for you to get $2 off each of 5 cds at record and tape traders, tomorrow through sunday.

weird 80s moment, did anyone ever notice that the music in ghostbusters when they're in dana's apartment before they reach the "stairs that go up" is the music that tom hanks was composing in "The Man With One Red Shoe?" did anyone here ever even see that movie? hehehe

and lastly, if you haven't, go see the adventures of priscilla, queen of the desert... especially now, notice that they have agent smith, leonard from memento and the bloody limey from the limey! weird combination of drag queens if i've ever seen one... but an awesome movie.

Even Cooler than the Penguin!!
by elfie at 10 February, 2004 - 8:52 AM
http://www.lanceandeskimo.com/flash/quest.html

This game is amazingly cool if you like quest type games. I don't want to give it away, but you really should play it. The soundtrack alone is fantastic. And it's quite an inpressive group of people who put it together considering it's a free online flash game. Probably the best one I've ever played.

It's even got great replay value, because after you beat it there are some gameplay changes to make things more interesting. Don't worry, there's a strategy guide if you get stuck.

I think this could make us even more popular than Hey Ya Charlie Brown!

Calculus is the Satan
by C Mo at 03 February, 2004 - 4:57 PM
I just felt like taking a break from my Calculus homework to announce that Calculus is, indeed, Satan. It is pure evil and designed to fool with people who are good in English and History and suck at the math. It's like Algebra gone over to the dark side, losing all reason and logic.

Valentine's Day
by muhgcee at 02 February, 2004 - 11:59 AM
Anyone know of a good place on the Internet where I can get a candy/rose combo for a decent price ($50 or less) delivered fresh? I have been looking around a bit and most of the places seem pretty expensive. Anyone tried florist.com? They seemed like a reasonable price but I haven't heard of them. Also, does every place just use overnight delivery or do some of them send the florist out to deliver it? I was under the impression that proflowers did this, but maybe not.
