black and white photography
by muhgcee at 27 February, 2005 - 12:44 AM
Am I the only one that thinks black and white photography does nothing more than take out detail? In my opinion, art is about interpretation, and you take out a lot of the viewer's ability to interpret when you take out the color.

analyzing a saying
by muhgcee at 26 February, 2005 - 11:30 PM
Consider the saying: "Righty tighty, lefty loosey." This saying is actually pretty useless. Suppose you are screwing a screw into a piece of wood. So you want to go in the "tighty" direction. That means, according to the saying, that you want to turn the screwdriver to the right. But, what is the right turn relative to? The saying, in order to be correct, would have to make right relative to the top of the screw. The point at the top of the screw has an instantaneous velocity in the positive x direction, or to the right.

But who is supposed to know that the saying referencing the top of the screw? If referencing the bottom of the screw, it would be "Righty loosey, lefty tighty."

I think the saying should be "Using the top of the screw as our reference point, righty tighty, lefty loosey." Or to make it even more clear, why not just "clockwise tight?" That seems easier.

Sony Puts Pizza Ordering in Videogames
by Dan at 24 February, 2005 - 8:39 AM
Demonstrating a deep understanding of what its computer-gaming audience, Sony has built the ability to order pizza into its latest online multiplayer game.

Type the command "/pizza" while playing Everquest II, a fantasy game with 330,000 active players, and get the Pizza Hut Web site, where you can place orders for delivery.

Chris Kramer, spokesman for Sony Online Entertainment, said he believes this is the first time a game accepts orders for real-world items.

Sony plans to integrate the pizza function more tightly into the game, so players can charge pizza to their monthly game subscription bill.

  • He attempted to go 5 days with eating nothing but apples. He managed to go 3 (still impressive).
  • He sells testicle jewelry at ballsies.com. I am not going to buy any myself, but it is still funny.

Korn guitarist finds God, leaves band
by Dan at 23 February, 2005 - 8:00 AM
NEW YORK (Billboard) -- Korn guitarist Brian "Head" Welch has parted ways with the hard rock act, citing a recent religious awakening.

Welch broke the news Sunday on Bakersfield, California, station KRAB-FM.

"I had it in my heart to come here and explain to you," Welch said. "I'm good friends with Korn. I love those guys, and they love me, and they're very happy for me."

Addressing the aggressive tone of the music he made with Korn, Welch said, "Anger is a good thing, and if kids want to listen to Korn, good, but there's happiness after the anger. I'm going to show it through my actions how much I love my fans."

Welch added that he would be appearing at a local church on February 27, during which time he would "speak (about) how I got to this place in my life, and I'll answer all your questions."

On its official Web site (http://www.korn.com), Korn's remaining members said they respect Welch's wishes and hope "he finds the happiness he is searching for." The group is in the studio working on a new album, due in September, which will be its first since fulfilling its contract with Epic last year.

For now, no replacement for Welch has been named, nor has a new label home for the band.

Pentium 4 for sale
by iceman at 17 February, 2005 - 1:08 PM
I know I should probably ebay this but I figured that someone on this fourm may want/need a new processor.

I have a pentium 4 2.66 GHz
533MHz FSb
1MB L2 Cache

I bought this off of newegg for $174, I used it for all of 5 seconds, to find out that my motherboard was not compatable with 1MB L2 cache. Its past 7 days since I bought it so im kinda stuck with it. Id rather somone i know who will use it gets it then selling it up on ebay.

This is a retail processor so it does have a 3 years manufactuars waranty. If you buy it and it doesnt work ill refund your money. If you know anyone interested please leave a post or email me at:
milk3422 at invisibledefender.com <- where at ==@

I would really like to get about 150 for it, but if you give me a decent offer ill probably settle with that too. Or if you have something i want/ need we can trade. I just dont want to see a good processor go to waste.

Mieville vs. MegaRand
by ben at 17 February, 2005 - 5:16 AM
more via BoingBoing (i'm so glad they're on my yahoo rss now)

I'm becoming a much bigger fan of sci-fi than I used to be; when I was younger, I would fly straight past it on the shelves digging for more fantasy books to flip through. I suppose then, that's why I haven't read many of the books on China Mieville's list of 50 sci-fi books for socialists to read. At least he's included a few fantasy & other stuff that I have read.

LCDs
by muhgcee at 15 February, 2005 - 9:25 PM
Can someone please answer this question for Rich and I:

Why do "desktop" LCD monitors have such low resolution? My new laptop has a 15.4" widescreen that does 1920x1200 resolution. It is a truely beautiful screen. Yet, looking on newegg, I see that you have to go up to 23" and $1600 to get that same resolution in a desktop monitor. For 23" I want resolutions in the multiple of thousands. Hell, my 21" CRT does 2048x1536.

This could be complete BS. I've never read anything from this source before... but I thought it was... well, interesting might be the word for it. I'm not really sure...

Colin and Brad
by elfie at 07 February, 2005 - 2:48 AM
This Saturday night, Pie and I went to see Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood from "Who's Line is it Anyway?" at the Warner in DC. They were absolutely fucking brilliant. They played several of the usual Who's Line games as well as some new ones that just wouldn't work in a 30-minute time slot, but the real kicker was the finale.

They played the alphabet game, the one where each sentence has to start with the next letter of the alphabet, but with a little twist. They did it blindfolded and barefoot... with 100 live mouse traps on the stage (well, 97, because 3 snapped while laying them down). By about halfway through the game, they were just desperately crawling around on their hands and knees trying to carefully pick up the traps without setting them off and blindly swinging them around in an attempt to hit each other with them. I thought I was going to pee myself. Fucking hilarious.

If anyone is interested, it looks like they'll be in Baltimore in April. You should seriously go see this.

Anarchy X's solutions to save this nation.
by AnarchyX at 05 February, 2005 - 9:19 AM
1. Mandatory MAX 30hour work week. More than 30hours = mandatory overtime no matter what type of worker. This will bring immediate socio economic benefits to us including increased worker productivity, improved family life and a generally healthier society.
2. SIGNIFICANT Import tariffs on all goods delivered from overseas (no exceptions) for any nation that does not meet a standard of living and political freedom level as yet to be defined (shut down Chinese and Indonesian slave labor)

3. Fix shrubs tax cuts with a significant reduction in lower tier taxes while increasing higher end brackets.

4. Close all Non U.S soil and immediate territory military bases and operations

5. Impose significant "user fees" on all political "think tank" lobbying and other influence groups that are currently running our country of 100% matching. For every dollar contributed by any group require a matching amount to be collected with no exceptions down to the individual level.

6. Modify the constitution to define a corporation and to explicitly deny it any political rights. Deny corporations the right to petition any member of the U.S. government for any reasons (FLAT OUT no access to the political system for any reason no exceptions). Require a U.S. corporate charter for any business that wishes to conduct any operations outside of the U.S. The charter will be renewed every year based on a full audit of all taxes paid, and will be subject to an approval system requiring the corporation to prove its contribution to the U.S. This oversight system will require some degree of checks and balances as it may become a significant source of corruption if left unchecked (ie bribery, graft from within). The U.S corporate charter would only be a requirement for a company with any non U.S operations.

This is cool, though I found the selection somewhat limited. On my first try, I got a 14-step link between Nirvana and New Order.

carlessness
by ben at 03 February, 2005 - 3:27 AM
so, the AAA has been stupid... i've tried to get my car towed 3 times, each time calling at 3 o'clock, thinking, stupidly, that 2 hours would be enough time for the tow truck to get to me and take my car the 1 mile to the body shop... 1 time i cancelled the call at 6, the second time they never showed up and the 3rd time they came at 6:30, after telling me at 3 that they'd be there at 4:45.

Chain-Wrapped Strap-Ons
by elfie at 02 February, 2005 - 10:32 AM
Pie and I bought a couple T Shirt Hell shirts today and as part of the order form, they have a question that reads something like "How did you hear about us? (be specific, we might give you a free shirt)." This is what I wrote in that section of the form:
