I have somehow managed to get some kind of malware installed on my machine which was missed both by NOD32 and by Windows Defender.
When IE popup windows appear while I'm using Firefox, something hokey is going on. Fortunately, the links that whatever this is has tried to download that contain viruses are successfully being blocked by NOD32, but I still can't get rid of the culprit itself.
I'm looking for recommendations of other free malware scan/removal tools to try. Meanwhile, I've disconnected the machine from the network until I can do something about this.

The other day I thought it was high time to start encrypting my portable storage. I recently bought a 4GB thumb drive (my first one!) and started syncing my home directory to it. I keep this synced to my desktop home directory also. I use a packaged distribution of cygwin and rsync to do this.
Anyway I started using Truecrypt (Open-Source, free) on my thumb drive and laptop. It is very simple to use. On the thumb drive it was very easy to create autorun launcher that, opens the truecrypt exe, opens your truecrypt data file, prompts your for a password, and then maps it to a predetermined drive letter. All of this with out any software installation on the local machine.
Anyway, it only took me about 30 minutes of non challenging dinking around to get everything in place with truecrypt encrypting the contents. This time was less due to Truecrypt and more due to figuring out how to redirect other programs data storage to my Truecrypt partition and getting my synchronization scripts reworked
Easy to use ubiquitous data encryption is very important with any portable storage medium you may have be it a thumb drive or a laptop.

Anyone have (or know of) a utility that will allow one to say "if multiple programs are fighting for network bandwidth on this computer, program A always win" or "...program B always loses?"

live search for windows mobile just came out... features include:
1. Displays maps (zoom in and out is available as well as satellite maps)
2. Locates restaurants and other businesses based upon different categories
3. Shows live traffic conditions (not all cities are covered....but Phoenix is...see example below)
4. Supports GPS devices to show where you are on a particular map
5. Shows directions to or from a particular address
6. Search for a contact’s address without typing it or save a business to your contacts to use again later
7. Send a text message with business’ address and phone number to friends so they know where to meet you
8. Super-easy to use interface that also looks really nice
i'm chuffed, i must say

Anyone know a good utility for downloading an entire website? Something that will just start at the home page and follow/download every linked page/file/whatever that isn't on an external site?
NIN is doing some rather interesting marketing for the new album and I want to grab a local copy of everything while it's up.

I went ten whole months! Ten very long and feverish months. I tried to keep myself as occupied as possible. I picked up old hobbies, I kept my eyes out for new things. I figured, this was it, I can do this...if I keep myself occupied long enough then I can break this habit and something new and better will come along. I failed, my girlfriend even supports it! She doesn't understand though! Why?! What can I do?

So, most of you should already know that I'm going to be opening up Shorty's tomorrow again - this time it's myself, Pete, Tim & Phill, so, double the pleasure! come out for that, but also, next Friday, the 16th (1/2 way to my birthday!) is the premier of my night at Joe^2, so definitely come out for that! It will be the same lineup, different batting order though, so we'll see which gets more home runs...
the NEXT night is also very big, because LG will be spinning at Sonar... and he's opening for Mr. Scruff! So, if you're coming for Joe^2, stay for the dessert the next night! But make sure you come to mine first... and more metaphors!

I have been frustrated with this one for months. Google images accounts for about 40% of the hits to my site (Debian + Apache2). I really don't want this to be so. My site is hosted on a 384k upload DSL connection and I don't want to use my precious bandwidth on this. So I went the way of "robots.txt." That should have been an easy fix:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /images/
But...they keep on going. For months. I have tried different iterations of this (/images vs. /images/, Googlebot-Image vs *).
Then I figured I would try to just prevent hotlinking in general. Unfortunately, this isn't very easy. When I implemented something I found on the web, I couldn't use images from my own domain either. This is so god damned frustrating. Any ideas?

I really don't have anything to say about it at this time... except that I'm glad no more people showed up than were there... we were 1 seat shy most of the time, hehe
anyways, here you go - a very descriptive breakdown of the Mac vs. PC ads, and the assertion that most of them are wrong... fight!
also, the star trek phone... pretty cool, why didn't i hear about this before?
