Fucking lazy-ass American non-voters got nuthin' on the Iraqis. We have to brave getting off the damn couch while they have to brave suicide bombers and they still make it out in much higher numbers than us.
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Iraqis danced and clapped with joy Sunday as they voted in their country's first free election in a half-century, defying insurgents who launched eight suicide bombings and mortar strikes at polling stations. The attacks killed at least 36 people.Polling stations officially closed as of 5 p.m., but the elecion commission said anyone still in line would be allowed to vote. An Iraqi election official said that 72 percent of eligible Iraqi voters had turned out so far nationwide.

Most of us here on Easily Amusing (including myself) like to bitch and complain about the current administration. But I have not personally noticed any changes in my life that I can attribute to Bush's policies. Has anyone else noticed any significant changes in their own lives that they can attribute to the political situation of the country? The closest I can come is rising tuition costs thanks to our Republican governor. Not that I necessarily disagree with that position . . .

Starting in less than a week, I will be working from 7pm-7am half of the days (not every other day though). I will be completely changing my sleep schedule. I will probably sleep from about 8am-5pm every day. So on my off days, I will be wide awake the whole night, able to party the night away. But, I doubt any of my friends will want to stay up as late as me. Does anyone know of a "Night Owl Group" of sorts? What I am looking for is a group of people that likes to or has to stay up until the morning every day, but doesn't feel like sitting in front of the computer playing World of Warcraft every night. I think it would be neat to have maybe weekly or twice-weekly events for a group like this to get together and do "social" things. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

So I've beaten Shadow Hearts (1) and I'm going to beat Final Fantasy X-2 with the "regular" endings, and while the games were enjoyable, I didn't think either of them merited playing through a second (or fifth or whatever) time in order to get the "good" or "best" ending. I put in my 40-80 hours and my $30-$50; I think I deserve to see the good endings, don't you? So... anyone know where I can download videos of them? Bittorrent links are fine, but I don't have (or want) any other P2P file sharing stuff.

i watched Wasabi last night, "quite possibly the best French language, English subtitled, Japanese action-comedy ever," their tagline, not mine, but it is really good... and i have to say Ryoko Hirosue is probably one of the hottest women i've ever seen in a movie. forget Portman and Thurman... ok, don't forget them, but rather, put them aside for a little while... ok, maybe Johansson can stay, but only if she plays video games quietly for a while

yeah, it was a pretty slow weekend for me... stayed at home all day saturday and most of sunday, but did rent some movies (Ghost In the Shell 2, Wasabi & Resident Evil: ApotofLips) and went to Red Emma's on Sunday. Man, they have some good coffees and teas, super plus A in my book. And the people working there are cool... but other than that, i got nothing?
i'm guessing that people here didn't do too much, since, well, there's nothing here

From one of my favorite blogs:
It is normal for U.S. citizens to be under the direct control and supervision of police officers, at school, in public, and in their homes.
It is normal for the government to have complete authority over your body and over every aspect of your private life.
It is normal for the government to have policies that are in direct contradiction to the will of the people.
It is normal for the government to enforce its policies through direct physical violence and brutality.
It is normal for the government to silence dissent.
It is normal to be afraid

i found this today... it's pretty damn cool
Unix (which is no longer an acronym) came from Unics which came from Multics (which is one)
BSD stands for Berkely Software Distribution (because they produced Unix 4.1 bsd there)
AT&T (Bell Labs) owns Unix, but because they have been rewritten from scratch, Minix, Linux & GNU can be (and are) free.
neat... or am i just being geeky?

now, i'm not the original raver or anything, but i was going out in DC a long time ago, and it's interesting that it took The Edge until a year and a half ago to finally find something to stick with on a saturday night.
I remember N00che's night there, that was really good, but the sound and the space didn't fit with having house in their main room, and I remember a short lived series before that (hi Sasha!) that was good but usually pretty empty... i vaguely remember some one offs even earlier, but by "vaguely" i can only say "not the capital ballroom." (which, btw, became Nation and hosted Buzz for a long ass time)

It appears that the rumors, were pretty close to true.
It looks pretty comparable in specs and pricing to the bottom-end Dell Dimension 2400.
I can't figure out how I feel about this. This as well as Apple's new iWork suite is clearly a direct challenge to the low-end wintel software/hardware market. That's good for competition, but I honestly liked Apple as a top-end niche player and I thought they were happy with that too. I wonder if this means they'll also eventually offer a 50$ lcd monitor or something.
In any case, Steve Jobs is making some serious moves here.

I had been looking forward to January for about a month now, because January was when Ben would take my old Series 1 TiVo off my hands, giving me justification to purchase a second Series 2 TiVo. The goal of this venture was to take advantage of TiVo's much advertised Multi-Room Viewing combined with their recommended wireless networking add-on. From their website:
Watch what you want, where you want!
Get more viewing choices from any room. With multi-room viewing, you decide not only what and when to watch, but also where to watch!
Kids watching the downstairs TV? No problem - just transfer your favorite recordings to the upstairs TV!
...
Not so. I call shenanighans.

Sen. Barbara Boxer and Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones object to the certification Of Ohio’s electoral votes.
Four years late is better than never I suppose. It would be cool if the left had enough seats in the house to do some damage with this contest. Its a shame that this is no more than posturing on a principle. I wish there was some really hot-shit investigative journalist that could blow this whole vote-rigging thing wide open, Watergate-style. Even a mediocre one could do it probably, its not a hard story to figure out.

It is an old perception that Libertarians are a third-party incarnation of disaffected Republicans. (Just as Greens are more likely disaffected Democrats). Here's a good article for all you freedom-loving Republicans out there. The bottom line: don't be a Libertarian just because the party you hate more is totalitarian. Be a Libertarian because any party is totalitarain.

As a continuation of the theme started by xtheowl:
Education Dept. paid commentator to promote law.
It seems this administration doesn't understand that the government has to have its advertising during the commercials and has to identify itself as the advertiser, just like every other institution.

Somehow I came across this link and I laughed. And now you can too.
It's about the light hearted topic of the End of the World

I don't have all my albums handy, so I won't say that Nine Inch Nails has never used upper-case letters, but I'm probably not the only one here who thought that Trent Reznor's standard practice was all lower-case except for logos.
That being said, WTF, MATE?
It looks as though this change has coincided with the completion of the new album. What does that say about the new album? What does it say about the future music of Nine Inch Nails? I have no idea. I'm probably just reading too much into it. Maybe it was New Year's Eve when he made the latest site updates, and he was too drunk to realize he had bumped the caps-lock key.
I guess we'll see.

so yeah, i know this isn't our normal type of stuff, but with new people come new explanations...
i'm not sure how many people remember this, or even ever knew it, but the site was envisioned (by me) to be a place where anybody could put anything... an anarchistic section of the web, where people say whatever they feel like saying. now, most of the argumentative ones have left, and this weekend was our first experience with trolling, so i am wondering, is the crowd feeling that we should lock things down and set up a closed community, with new members approved by us (or rather, most likely admins), or do we agree to keep it as open as possible?
if we close it, we won't be getting as many new people and ideas coming in, if we leave it open, we're vulnerable to the occassional tub girl or (until i write a check against this) possible javascript attacks...
so... opine away crowd

I bought Pie's dad the new Pirates! for Christmas, and the damn thing won't run on his Dell Dimension 2400. First problem was that someone sold this man a 2.4 Ghz machine with only 128 megs of ram, half of which was used by the onboard video... so yeah, I got him another half a gig so the thing at least boots in under 5 minutes now.

I just sold 18 textbooks on eBay, but 4 did not sell. If you would like one or more, you can have them for free. Either pick them up, or pay me for shipping. The books are:
