if your drive is running low on space, and you think it might be a good idea to move your pagefile to another partition... be very very careful how you do it, otherwise, like me, you could spend 5 hours reinstalling windows and your 9 billion programs.

My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And that land that I live in
Has God on its side.

been thinkin', sarah about what you said, girls and guys on this site... interesting demographics and all... as i said, during the week, the girls posted a lot more than the guys, but around friday afternoon, the men started to ramp up, and since muhgcee's post a few back, you'll notice the trend.
is it a weekend thing? a call to arms? let's explore shall we?

so there were cookies left over from a meeting. so when i went over to gank some, i found a lovely white chocolate chip cookie and grabbed it. when i got back to my desk i noticed that it also seemed to contain dried cranberries - yummy! when i bit into it i noticed there were also dried blueberries - even bet..ter...umm..white chocolate, red cranberries, blueberries - SHIT! WAR COOKIES!
my gluttony has made me consume patriot-themed baked goods.
i live in shame.

So I got delayed pretty heavily today on my way to work via the great public transportation we have have here. First a train was cancelled, then the second train was delayed, yadda yadda. But while on the second train, the driver actually informed all the passengers of the coolest deal they have which I had nearly forgotten about:
If you're 20 or more minutes late, the company pays for a taxi.

Ok, I don't have a link for this but just heard it on the news.
Since Christiania (a small village inside Copenhagen which has basically no laws on drug consumption, at least not soft drugs) is getting shut down and thus the selling of hasch will be stopped, the dealers are tomorrow going on a three day strike as they think drug users in Copenhagen will resort to harder drugs like heroin.
Pretty funny, but also damned good.

Why is it ok to show bombs being dropped on cities where people live, but it's not ok to show dead people on TV?
Because you know, it's ok to allude to people being blown up, but heaven forbid you lift the wool off everyone's eyes and show what's really going on...
This F**KIN world makes no sense anymore.

So today, my principal got on the PA system before school and said that she was sorry for making the comments she made. She said that she had been approached by many of my colleagues and told her that they were disturbed by her comments (well, duh). And then she also gave the teachers a letter. Did she mention the need for discussion? No. Did she say that maybe she needs to go and take a class or something? No. She just said she was sorry (which is better than nothing), but the damage has been done.

I tend to believe that everyone is racist, they don't don't realize it. It's natural based on the way we grew up. Maybe our children won't be, but we are. It's not intentional, but we know it's wrong. We do it anyway. It just comes out.
I know I am. I wish I wasn't. but I am.
What do you think?

why do people on Arrakis speak with British accents? are sci fi fans, and especially Dune fans, so Anglophile that we need the caveat of a sophisticated lilt to hold our interest and make something seem more intellectually satisfying?
and i'll tell you this: overacting was running rampant on Channel 33.
ex. 1) death scene of Alliyah (sp?), 2) Leto(#3) throwing pelvis forward in defiance of the sand..."I WILL NOT FEAR..." i thought that was a meditation thing, not a superficial display of volume thing.
it never turns out as good for my eyes as it was for my head. i hope that i can reconcile myself to this.

Ok, so I'm at school thinking I'm going to be involved in some long and complicated department meeting today but instead, an emergency faculty meeting was called. So, I go in and i'm already a bit late (whoops!) and my principal is talking about how we can't let kids out to use the bathroom; that the school is trying to get as many of the hallwalkers out as possible, etc. And then she talks about all the fires and what to do and what not to do (this is really dull and I'm not going into it). Then she says: and for all my black teachers out there...I'm really ashamed at you because you're not doing your job. You're yelling at students and calling them names. In fact, some of the white teachers are doing a better job than you are. She's like, white people have done a lot of things for us black folk...in fact, some got their tongues cut out for teaching us how to read. You should be ashamed. Ok, my principal is black, but is that statement ok? It surely wasn't with me. Not only is she making it into a competition, but she's also making it into a RACE thing...and not in a way that can foster discussion. I mean, is she trying to make things awkward between the White and Black teachers or is this her way of creating a feelgood environment for all involved??? Anyways, should I be offended by this? It wasn't just her words but also how she said it....like, we (i'm white, btw) white people have once again shamed the black folk and they're just lesser people because they're Black. I don't know...maybe it's just because I hate my school....

has anyone seen my scarf? you'll know it's my scarf 'cause it's grey and has no distinguishing features. except the day i lost it i dropped it in a muddy puddle so maybe it's not so much grey right now.
spent sunday in the academic pursuit of perfecting my Dune cinematic prowess by renting Lynch's version, then watching 6 hours of the sci-fi version, and toppered off the evening with the Children of Dune installment #1. tonight at 9 pm my eyes are glued to the screen like powerpuff stickers on a little girl's locker.
i feel i am not the only person who did this. the hallway of my apartment building was filled with the sounds of Shai-Hulud starting in the afternoon. it's a strange neighborly affinity we have. the same thing happened when the Fifth Element came on three weeks ago.

This coming week, the Earth will cringe.
While our planet's axis will change near the end of the week, resulting in equal length days and nights wherever you live on our fair globe, we too will most likely cringe. Cringe at what now seems to be an inevitable conflict, cringe at our leaders, and cringe at ourselves for what our race has become.

(Sorry I can't link to it, Brinkster won't let me) I think this is a disgrace to IT people everywhere. Not only is the HD a mess, but it also is a host to a web server with a dynamic ip address assigned through DHCP. Its supposed to allow outside access through the department. BUT, since the address changes continually when I reboot. What's the POINT?
Anyhow, this has been my aggrivation for a few months now. I'm cleaning up the mess of an untalented and quite cocky co-worker of mine. We'll call him George. George, also has no idea how to name his objects. He calls everything myRecord, myTable, mySQL, Text1, Text2, Command1.
UGGHH, I'm done now.

last night was pub night. just one more reason to pity all of the blatherings readers who don't live in the charm city. see, here in b-more we know and appreciate poverty and all of its nuances. so we drink in, cheaply.
the event was hosted by the lovely miss brooke and her gentleman, tim.
music provided by the peanut gallery: pete, creighton, tim, and a guy with really fuzzy hair named dan. he was nice.

Ah yes, from the stream of the Lawn Wranglers comes a link to this excellent clip. Originally made for the swedish show Kobra, it shows excellently edited snippets of Bush and Blair doing their speech thing, but they sing. Yes, sing!
From the "Read my lips" segment
Quicktime required, broadband suggested.

This has been a relatively exciting week for me...which is good...although no one has set my building on fire, as of yet (just some fights, as per usual). I brought my students the Sarah Jones's lyrics of "Your Revolution" and as to be expected, I got the snickers and the giggles and whatnot, but most of my classes handled it relatively maturely (for 15 year olds). Some of my students even took it home and showed it to the woman (or women) in their lives. They told me the women in their lives liked it a lot. We've been talking about freedoms in my classes and how they are protected by the Bill of Rights and are not to be infringed upon by the government. We all know that is not true, especially as of late with this whole USA Patriot Act and the TIA issues. Ahhh, America. They're also bugging out about the war. Their geography isn't that good, so I've had to pull down the map a few times and show them where Iraq is in relation to the US and Europe. They're worried that Iraq might bomb us (from Iraq...I told them it was pretty much impossible because they don't have bombs with a radius of 7000 miles, but I could be wrong...it's happened before, it'll happen again). No real point to this whole post, but it's been a while.
Oh, yeah, and I had an interview with CTY this week for an instructor position to teach a class called Law and Politics in US History, probably at St. Mary's College (the irony abounds). I'm so excited. The interview seemed to go very well and I hope I get the job. I *WANT* the job....BAD. However, I'm not going to sit here and say I got the job because I know there are people who are WAY more qualified than I applying for the same position, but hopefully they offer me the position anyways. But the interview was fun. Wish me good luck :)
Oh, and it's Thursday...weekend, here we come!

So this seems interesting:
"My thesis is an attempt to fill in the void in academic work about blogs. Previously in articles and commercial books published about blogs (Rebecca Blood's books and the O'Reilly book, for example), why we blog has been researched using personal experience, with a few indepth interviews, or by analyzing websites. None of these three ways can come close to providing as accurate a depiction of the blogging population - who we all really are, why we blog, and how we're using our blogs - as a survey."
Take the survey!

Remember all of the hype that was being thrown around a day or two ago about the new "Drones" that the Iraqi government has? They were supposedly buried in Hans Blix' report to the UN, but he didn't explicitly speak about them and they've now become the GOP's "Smoking Gun". Well, if I knew what they looked like, I don't think that I'd be addressing the UN Security Counsel about them either.
Here's the article.

last night at school i put my name and an explanation (re: book crossing) in a copy of Stranger in a Strange Land and left it in the quad at school. I hope somebody reads it.
Thought i would let you guys know since this is where my inspiration lies.
I think you may be able to get addicted to leaving books around. sounds funnie, but i got a weird rush thinking about how maybe somebody would read it and maybe they would really like it and give it to their little sister who gets inspired and becomes a writer and writes a book that i read and love. i could be perpetuating the institution that gives me the most joy in my life.
leave a book, it gets you high.

This is a pretty fuggin' cool idea: BookCrossing
Basically you first read a book, register it on the site and optionally record some journal entries to go along with it, then get some stickers off the site, slap those in the book, and finally 'release' the it (be it "forgetting" it in a coffee shop, leaving it on a bench, giving it to a friend, etc).

STANKONIA!
on a less political, but no less hip-hop note...
My best friend in the world (and the woman who knows me best) recently had a revelation that has been occupying my brain like a bologna sandwich in a hot locker. Eva was watching television one morning not long ago when she came upon it. She then called me, anxious to let me in on the light of knowledge.
Adrienne! (she said)
You get laid less than the Golden Girls! (she said)
she didn't mean Blanche. she meant Sophia.

ok I need to know...
Where does this what's the difference between a duck joke come from?
I grew up listening to this.
Never understood it.
Thought my father made it up to humiliate me at inopportune moments.
I need to know: Why do other people know this cruel and unusual statement?
Please someone enlighten me~

For those of you that don't live on the East Coast, there is a potato chip company named "Utz" based out of PA that only delivers regionally. Recently, I noticed their Salt and Vinegar chips had too much Salt and Vinegar. I wrote them. Check it out! I know it doesn't sound that exciting, but just click the link and I think it's more than you'd expect . . .

I had a fun day today. So much stuff going on these days. There is a big protest march basically every weekend in DC now and today was no different. Today's was themed, everyone wore pink and most of the marchers were women. So much pink.

I'll come right out and say it. I love what Ayn Rand wrote. She knew what she was talking about. Capitalism provides for growth, and in its purest form, would separate the wheat from the chaff. People in this country are fat and lazy, and feel no need to make themselves better. "But life is hard, and i'm tired," is grating on my ears more and more.

Whats that meow?
One night during my first and only visit to "Baltimore" (ugh) Dren was pretty well lit-up and insisted on watching this movie, and I thought it was so goddamn funny that I bought the DVD when i got back to LA, and now everyone I hang out with feels the need to quote lines from the film ad nauseum. Its become a focal point of life in LA among me and my friends. AND ITS ALL ADRIENNE'S FAULT. :P
In any case, I thought it was amusing that it won a "High Times Stony Award"
BEST STONER MOVIE

ok, i have been sent this from pyrex, another example of a) how literacy in the world is heading in... another... not so completely worthwhile direction, and 2) the fact that when i have kids some day, and they become teenagers (if i don't kill them first)... i will be completely and utterly unable to understand a word that will come out of their mouths.
