Otakon 2004 Group Pre-Registration
by elfie at 31 March, 2004 - 7:58 AM
Hey kids, I'm getting together a Group-Rate Pre-Registration for Otakon 2004, and I wanted to find out if anyone here wanted to get in on the action.

If you have no idea what Otakon is, it's a huge anime and video game convenation at the Baltimore Convention Center every year. This year it's Friday July 31st to Sunday August 2nd. Their website is and I have pictures from the last two years up on my site.

allright all, i'm entering into development mode, i'm going to start working on some requested changes for the site... most importantly, 2 things:

1: you won't see whether or not a post has new comments unless you're logged in now. basically, i'm going to work on more of a "logged into the community" approach... new posts show up, your username will be your name for comments when you're logged in, etc. this will get rid of the "i can keep up at work but not at home" problem
along these lines,

2: without absolutely killing the design, i'm going to have posts with new comments show up in another color - probably red (when you're logged in) on the Latest Commented Posts thingy. while i'm working on these things, you're welcome to post the usual stuff on this thread, and i'll see what i can do...

Wow. What an annoying, funky, weird trip.

Recently I've been screwing around ("don't screw around, you're screwing around too much") with my computer. It's an aged P3 666MHz, 256 RAM, 20GB + 30GB harddrive, integrated sound (now using an ancient Aureal Vortex 1.0 card), nVidia TNT2 32MB.

So, I decided to mess with the video card.

Final Fantasy Crystal Origin Tactic Chronicles Advance XI-2
by elfie at 29 March, 2004 - 7:23 AM
So I came to the realization the other day that I am currently in the process of playing not one, not two, but three Final Fantasy games concurrently. I have three non-PC video games systems and I'm playing a Final Fantasy game on each of them. This realization has made me decide that I'm going to bless you all with my babblings about each of them. (And yes, I'm going to stick amazon links all over this sucker. No bitching.)

ooh... i've been giggling about this for the last 15 minutes with ralph and peter... so you may or may not have noticed over there that rich left a comment in anne's old post here after some... well, unique... individuals graced us with their presence... of course i was intrigued... so i looked around sitemeter (best idea ever!) and found what they were searching for... feel free to poke at that one, we have been for a while...

so, i kept going... and found out that msn loves us greatly... enough, in fact, to make us #2 AND #4 when searching for crackhouses in detroit. i swear, some days i think the world has fallen off axis and i'm the strange one...

oh, and for anyone interested, we're #4 in google for "shotgun shine" (with quotes)...

high tech outsourcing not the problem?
by ben at 24 March, 2004 - 5:42 AM
the washington post thinks not...

why is it that when people are lamenting the current decline of high tech, high paying jobs, they still wring their hands over the "bursting of the tech bubble"... this was four years ago now... i would think that the jobs that were lost are going to stay lost, and we're not losing more because of it by now... can we please all agree that it happened and we're moving on?

job rates have gone up and down since then... in and out of the country... it bothers me that this is still the scapegoat...

Al Quaeda is bragging about thier nukes. If they aren't lying, it makes me wonder if the real reason we've avoided capturing bin Laden and went after Saddam instead is because we knew all along that the threat of al Quaeda's nukes were real and Saddam's weren't. We can't nuke al Qaeda because they aren't a country and don't live in a big enough group, so the whole "mutually assured destruction" strategy is shit. So maybe we haven't gone full-crazy apeshit on them yet because the administration is rightly afriad of pissing them off badly enough to use a nuke? Maybe we only went after Saddam because America was too bloodthirsty to sit idle and Iraq was the only country that couldn't threaten us back?

We're fucked and I'm pissed.

what the Internet lacks
by ben at 18 March, 2004 - 4:24 AM
One of my favorite characters in movies and stories is the secretary/underling/assistant that always knows what the boss wants, and has it ready before the boss even knows that he or she wants it. This character is often underappreciated until the end of the movie (mind bogglingly, these characters never see the value in this ubiquitous efficiency), and never actually has ambition to be the one in charge. I think that this character type is one that i could get along with well, mainly because I have an extraordinary lack of this characteristic. To anticipate my needs and be able to respond to them quickly and correctly is something that even I can't do, and I would not lay that burden on anyone, unless I could afford it.

I was cruising some ditto-head blog the other day (I've looked but can't find the link). Anyway, all the talk of these people was about trashing groups who criticise Bush's war in Iraq by translating it into a celebration of Al Quaeda's strikes. Characterizations of the "tin-foil hat left" dancing with glee at reports of dead soldiers and such abounded.

So to set the record straight, no one is against finding and killing any group that harms or threatens America, no one, not even the "tin foil" crowd. Of course, Iraq niether harmed or threatened us, yet that is where most of our fight money goes.

by ben at 15 March, 2004 - 11:27 AM
ok, for any .Net programmers out there, here's something i have not found the answer to anywhere i have looked... i have a radiobuttonlist inside of a datalist, and can get the radiobuttonlist to fill with data easily enough, and set the autopostback to true... but cannot seem to find out what event gets fired when the radiobuttonlist inside the datalist changes its selected index (i.e. when you click one of the buttons)... if anyone has any clues, i'm all for it... if you know anyone you think is a .Net guru, ask them... no one i know has figured it out yet.

by pyrex at 15 March, 2004 - 11:01 AM
Very interesting, very interesting indeed. A little quote should sum this up nicely:

"I heard, years ago, about a rule prohibiting the use of the flag in advertising for any means. I committed this to memory, but never looked it up. No one ever believed me when I mentioned it, because I couldn’t cite a reference for it.

I looked this up after seeing a link to this page, which compares the latest updates from Kerry’s and Bush’s blogs side-by-side (ingenious, if you ask me!). It ticked me off that Bush was using the flag, and I decided to find out whether my memory was correct.

It turns out that George W. Bush’s website is in violation of the United States Code, Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 3. He owes $100, or thirty days in jail."

Hey, I'm starting a fantasy baseball league and was wondering if anyone from here would be interested in joining. It's a 12 team league, head to head w/players from both leagues. At this point, I don't think it'll cost anything to join, we'll just do it for the competition. If you'd like to join there's only one thing required, you must be active.

patrick was big pimpin'
by ben at 10 March, 2004 - 9:18 AM
while wandering through the site elfie posted (just below, ya goof), i saw a quiz on "what kind of jew are you?" it's funnier if you misplace the stress, hehe... anyway, i clicked a link to patrick tv, a documentary about st. patrick, and it made me wonder... so here's my question:

who are 5 people you would interview from any time in history, if you had the chance, and maybe what questions you'd ask them...

news and such
by ben at 09 March, 2004 - 2:28 PM
so i'm tired of dealing with trillian... after a year and a half, the "nice to have" items become "really irritated that it doesn't have" items, and it just died on me, and you have to pay for it, so... i'm looking around... anyone know anything about jabber? or anything else?

secondly, elfie's been pestering me for changes, which is good, because a) no one else does and b) if i need his help, he is like, 9 feet away... so, i'm going to get working on stuff and i will hopefully have stuff soon. that is all

by muhgcee at 09 March, 2004 - 7:10 AM
How to be "1337" - This article is pretty accurate, except I think they need to follow it with one of those "How 1337 are you?" quizes.

I scored a 77; 51-90 points: You are a medium-core libertarian, probably self-consciously so. Your friends probably encourage you to quit talking about your views so much.

Ya, that about nails it.

by ben at 08 March, 2004 - 5:17 AM

floridian update cause I just have to get it out
by adrienne at 05 March, 2004 - 9:47 AM
I fucking hate this place, this peninsular hell is going to drive me to drink. Vapid women, agendas under every toupe', fake tans & blond highlights on men and women, white sequined cowboy boots, a complete lack of acceptable curries, and all the good strippers migrated somewhere...and I can't find them! I'm thinking of starting a 'save the dren fund' to finance my return to the original 13. Sally Struthers is on my short list of possible spokes-persons. Hope you guys are well.

Metrosexual nonsense...
by ralph at 05 March, 2004 - 8:22 AM
I found this site indirectly from Fark when I was reading this horrific article. I think this metrosexual stuff is going waaaay too far. I like to look good and try to take care of myself, but it'll be a cold day in hell when I'm seen at a club "giving birth" to a guy I'm dancing with (like I'd be dancing w/a guy).

I don't think most of you will care, but Ben told me to post this anyway, and you all know I do whatever Ben tells me.

I sometiems make mix CDs and give them to my friends when I think they might like one of them. I just finished making a section of my website that has track listings and whatnot. I'm going to start printing this URL the CD labels:

by ben at 03 March, 2004 - 3:03 AM
yes gentle readers... and even the not so gentle ones (hi everybody!), i was not swallowed into some hole from which there is no escape (i'm fine!), i was just swallowed into a hole of slim requirements and short deadlines (work's tough!).

i have emerged with a question for those of us who are here (hi again!): isn't it weird that putting the preposition (correctly even!) at the beginning of a word now sounds strange to us? (work AT?)... isn't it also weird that even after spelling it for close to a quarter of a century, i still am not sure why the e comes before the i in weird, ignoring all other laws (weird, huh?)
