Baltimore thoughts
by ben at 27 November, 2006 - 6:44 AM
Pardon me while I get serious for a moment. Baltimore has a problem, I think, and I also think that it's something we need to talk about. Racism in this city is something that everyone knows is there, but no one does anything about. We couch it by saying there are dangerous neighborhoods, safe neighborhoods, but really that's not what we mean. There are mixed areas (Patterson park, for one), and mixed schools (City, where I went, was 85% black, and about 6 or 7% White, with the remainder being Latino, Asian, and Other - i don't even know what that meant), but not many; the debate on why, and how to fix it just doesn't seem to be happening. I love this town, and I think I want to stay here, and I think this shouldn't continue to be a problem. So my shower thought today was about starting a weekly (or so) web cast to talk it out, and actually come up with ideas on how to fix the problem. It would be a simple format, I talk, read and respond to emails... unless my brother hooks me up with equipment, i probably couldn't take phone calls, but that would be something to think about. So I'm tossing this out to the crowd... what do you think? Am I cracked? Has Ben finally lost it, or do you think it's a worthwhile endeavor? Dream of dreams, people actually listen, and changes actually happen, but I'd just like people to question their own viewpoints, and maybe actually make Baltimore the "greatest city in America" like all of our bus stops tell us it is.

Today's shower thought brought to you by: Speed Racer

for getting your desired RSS feeds to your tablet - if you want to read RSS feeds on your tablet:
Go to your current aggregator of choice (google home page, netvibes, my yahoo, whatever).
Copy the URLs of the feeds you want to read to a new notepad file.
Connect your tablet, copy the notepad file over, open it in your tablet.
Open your rss reader, and copy the URLs one by one into the reader.

Saves a lot of time vs. finding them online through the tablet...

Does anyone know if you're supposed to catch the show early in the run or later?

Do you like Alton Brown?
by ben at 17 November, 2006 - 2:29 AM
If you're anything like me, you do. Via 100 Cookbooks, via GMail's RSS feeds at the top, I found the curious cook, who does food science at the next level. it's very cool, i highly recommend it if you like to cook, are interested in what you eat for nutrition's sake, or are just a little bored in the office today...

What kind of point is this article trying to make?
by ben at 16 November, 2006 - 11:55 PM
check out this article from the CBC:
Montreal police defend guidelines for Hasidic Jews

What do its tone, and content (specifically percentage of the article given to certain aspects of it) suggest? Do you think the article is defending the police, or suggesting that they are wrong with their policy? Is the article biased, or unbiased, in your opinion?

Vote Early, Vote Often!
by elfie at 15 November, 2006 - 9:41 AM
I'm sure many of you remember the fine piece of cinema in which Ben, Pie, and I recently made our big screen debut. And don't forget about Stu's car, which met its demise in the film!

Well, the writer and director of that film is in a competition presented by the Sundance Channel and the Sci-Fi Channel with his short film, titled "The Sitter" (which actually stars much of the cast of Ghostwatcher II). You can view the film here:

http://www.sundancechannel.com/exposure/

You can cast one vote per day for the rest of the week. Please cast your vote for The Sitter!

so, write away! (heh... if you laughed at that, you're as dorky as i am) also, someone needs to update that picture... a little old...

and another thing...
by ben at 10 November, 2006 - 1:53 AM
I had a thought on the way in to work today. Really, it's only a mile and a half, i don't have time for more than one...

apparently (and, you know, at the time, i was 15... not so much aware), 12 years ago, when the redder (or bluer? i can't remember) side took Congress, part of it was due to scandals involving the Democrats... there were apparently several (this is all i could find in 5 minutes, but NPR produced more)... and it makes me wonder...

i know there's a cycle to these things, we swing one way, we swing back the other way in this country... there are also those who say that the pendulum isn't actually swinging, too. but i'm wondering here - what is the cause of these changes... is there a pattern to what shapes the changes in American public interest? some people say that it's the loudest voices - i don't think that's correct, but it's entertaining.

to quote Steve, the comment board is open...

Drowning your children: two+ years in an asylum.
by ben at 10 November, 2006 - 1:43 AM
Lisa Diaz is all better now

this is just bizarre... I mean, she killed her own children. in the big scale of things, i put that under mass murder, but, you know, slightly higher than blogging while angry.

in other news, logic surrendered.

Perl problems

Thought I might post this here to see if anyone has some bright solutions <br/> <br/>Just did a fresh install of RHEL 4 and I'm trying to load some Perl modules from CPAN. For some reason it appears to lock up and CPU utilization spikes to 100% and stays there. Anyone see this before and have a solution?

Ed got me to thinking that, now that I'm getting more and gigs, it would be nice to have a centralized location for people to find out where I'll be spinning. While I am working out building my own, I figured I'd keep it on google calendar for you all... I'll keep this (pretty easily) as up to date as possible, hehe

I'VE GOT GIGGED!
by ben at 07 November, 2006 - 12:54 AM
Sunday, November 12, 2006, I officially start my recurring gig at Joe^2 in Baltimore! Come out and see me, if you can, I really, really could use the support! If this one goes well, I'll be spinning there every other Sunday, so please, come out and show them how we like to party! At 7 pm. On a Sunday. but hey! there's pizza there! you all like pizza, right! and there's... beer! and wine! and I spied a book of "the big book of bad ass shots!", so you can have... that... too?

Anyways, it's my first (possibly paying) recurring gig, so, come on down.

Joe^2 (pronounced Joe Squared) is at the corner of North Ave. & Howard St. in Baltimore, just a few blocks from the Charles Cinema. There's safe and free parking just a couple of doors down in the Korean Church/Farmer's Association(?) building's parking lot, and again, i'll be starting at 7 PM! hope to see you there!

Thanks again, so much to the people that came to my first ever spinning out, I wouldn't have been able to do this without you guys!

I know I've already emailed this to some of you that will be reading this, however, tough nuts, it's my site... hehehe
