So somewhat timidly I am throwing my hat in to politics it seems. I was disappointed to see no one coming forward to run in my district representing the issues that strongly impassion me. So I have put my money where my mouth is. Ok so it was just a $100 filing fee so far but I feel this is just the start of a very long adventure.
As many of you know I have been an active supporter of Ron Paul's Presidential campaign.
I strongly agree with his stances on:
shrinking the size of the Federal Government
defending of civil liberties
A foreign policy of defending ourselves without unnecessary foreign adventure or entanglements.
My run for Congress focus on these issues. These are important issues for Maryland and our country that are not being adequately addressed by our current leaders.
My Democratic opponent for the Second Congressional District is currently in his third term. I acknowledge that this will be a very large challenge. I feel folks are ready for change in business as usual.

So, i fixed the annoying lack of line breaks on the front page postings... don't know if anyone else noticed that, but i did.
Also, you can delete your whole post from the comments page, or if you're an admin, you can delete anyone's post from the comments page, not just the front page... use wisely.
next up: making the link-o-matic and latest comments shrink/show preferences stick again...

So, it's that time again... it's been 5 years, so why not.
My car is possibly near death, and I wanted to see what the crowd here had to say about it. I just spent $600 to replace the alternator and a few parts, and to get it, as the man at the shop says, "completely back to good condition" will cost another $1400. So that's $2K total for a car that KBB says is worth between $2K and $3,500, in GOOD condition (private party, not trade in). Now, if I fix everything, that will effectively give me another year or so with the car, making it cost about $167/month for all of this... which, coincidentally, is how much i was paying for it, per month, from when i bought it until august - so the car's been paid off for 4 months almost.
without the extra work, and to get the car (finally) registered and just leave it like it is will cost about $300, at which point i can sell it/donate it/drive it off a cliff and get something new... or new to me at least. i'm looking specifically at about $12K that i'd like to spend for a used car, obviously more if i go new...
thoughts? ideas? questions? fire away

So with the 180GB drive that came with my TiVo HD, I can store about 20 hours of HD or 180 hours of SD. That's plenty of SD, so we'll leave that out of the rest of the discussion, but 20 hours of HD isn't much, especially if we plan to record movies and save them for repeated viewing (which we often do). Between Heroes, Smallville, How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, and My Name is Earl plus extra padding on each show in case of run-over, that's 4 hours of HD gone already. If that was all we recorded on a weekly basis (it's not) and we never waited more than a week between watching shows (we do), that'd leave us room for about 8 movies at 2 hours each. And that doesn't leave any room for TiVo Suggestions, which are one of my favorite TiVo features. So I think I need more drive space.

well, we've (mostly) managed to fix the stuff that I broke by accidentally uploading a very old copy of the site when adding the DJ Gig calendar on the right...
you shouldn't be constantly logged off anymore, if you clicked to keep logged in, the archives and user profiles work again, and for those of you who can add links, you can add links again.
thanks for playing the DTC Upgrade game!

I've got an extra 512MB XD sized card now, since it doesn't fit any of my working cameras...
I've also got the camera, sans clicky button part, but you could tape a small wad of paper to it or something...
free to good home?

FBI Hoped to Follow Falafel Trail to Iranian Terrorists Here
Wendy and I have been talking about making massive trips to the ATM and going cash for everything we do 'round town as a budgeting tool. When you plunk 6 twenties down in a cashiers hand it seems much more real than signing your name to a credit card receipt. Who knew that there was an ever better reason to do this.
I tend to go to Tiendas now and again to buy mexican coke. I hope I am not on the deportation list should they ever start rounding people up.

for any of you that use Gmail, there's an update out now - you may not notice it at first, but there are several new features. Of course, with change comes pain. My 3 Gmail Firefox plugins - random signature (greasemonkey script), gmail checker, and Gmail Super Clean (i liked this look & feel a LOT better than regular gmail, and it seems clunky again now that i can't use it) - no longer work, but i'm sure patches will be up soon.

So, last year it was a lot of fun, and this year we have a whole extra table - Pre Thanksgiving should be a good time... who all wants to come?
Details:
location: my house
time: Saturday, November 17, 2007, 6 PM
what to bring: a side dish or dessert, we'll have this week to get them in, and next week to organize - I'd rather not have 12 pies from Superfresh left over... So either email me or comment here on what you'll bring (and you know, if you're coming or not). bringing something isn't absolutely necessary... just think, you'll be the only yanomamo at the feast without a squab...
what i will have: I will be making a Tofurkey (or two) for the vegetarians (and actually, i like them myself... i know, weird) and probably a roast for the non-vegetarians - Peter and I made one really early this year with garlic and herbs, it came out VERY well... and i want to try another jus gravy. I will also endeavor to provide liquid refreshment, but will probably tap someone to be my helper on this.
Hope to see you there!

You may or may not have heard that Trent Reznor was collaborating with hip-hop artist / spoken word poet, Saul Williams on a new album. The album has been released online at niggytardust.com. You can download the entire album for free or pay $5 for it if you want to support the artists. You've probably heard about Radiohead releasing their latest album online and letting people set their own price.
Quote from Trent in regard to how much he paid for Radiohead's latest album: "I bought the physical one, so I spent a whopping $80. [Pauses.] But, then I re-bought it and paid $5,000, because I really felt that I need to support the arts..."
On NiggyTardust! Trent did most of the music and Saul did most of the vocals. You might recognize Saul Williams as the guy who did the strangest Survivalism remix you've ever heard. It was only available as a B-Side on the vinyl single, but it was pretty wicked. You probably wouldn't peg me as a fan of hip-hop and you'd be right, but this is a pretty awesome collaboration. New York Magazine recently published a great interview with them both about this album.
Quote from Saul in regard to how he'd categorize the music: "Gosh, I don't know, ghetto gothic? I guess I'd characterize it as hard-core dance... It's so danceable. I have a lot to say, but I wanted to find a way to say it that didn't get in the way of me dancing my ass off."
I have been listening to their cover of Sunday Bloody Sunday for about 12 hours straight. It's fucking awesome. I am not exaggerating here. It's one of the best tunes I've heard in a long time. It's worth the $5 alone even if the rest of the album isn't really you're thing. If you don't want to spend $5 and don't have the bandwith do download the entire album, you can hear this track on Saul's MySpace page or on mine. Seriously. Listen to it. You'll like it.
One more quote from Trent: "This is the most involved I've been with any project outside NIN since Antichrist Superstar."
