IE/FF Bookmark Sync?
by elfie at 29 October, 2006 - 10:29 PM
Does anyone have a plugin or other utility that keeps Firefox Bookmarks and Internet Explorer Favorites in sync? In fact, I don't even really NEED it to sync. If it assumed that Bookmarks were "correct" and copied those over my Favorites periodically, that'd work too.

The only thing I can find is this, but the reviews are all negative and it's not 2.0 compatible.

Hell, if there was just a way to put my FF Bookmarks in the Windows Start menu like Favorites, that'd work too.

Post-Election Preparation
by muhgcee at 27 October, 2006 - 12:02 PM
On a recent The Show with Zefrank, I learned that President Bush is evidently not preparing for a Democratic takeover of the House or Senate. It is claimed that this is because they are in the "game" to win (and are therefore only planning for the possibility of a win). I ask this question to our faithful readers; Is the Bush administration not preparing for the possibility of a Democratic takeover of the House or Senate because:

a) They are idiots.
b) They know the Democrats aren't going to take over the House or Senate because it is rigged.
c) They are lying. They actually are preparing, but are saying otherwise for some purpose.

Cookie
by elfie at 24 October, 2006 - 4:20 AM
Cookie has a growth pressing against her urethra. She is unable to urinate. It is most likely cancer and possibly too far along to do much about. They are going to attempt to aspirate the growth today to see if they can determine what it is. No guarantee that they will be able to tell anything from that or even if they will be able to aspirate without causing internal bleeding.

She bit the doctor while they were trying to put the catheter in. Good for her. I would have too.

Pod 1, Mice: 0
by ben at 23 October, 2006 - 11:55 PM
I was wondering why, when I woke up this morning, Pod was staring at me, and very active. I chalked it up to his usual lassitude during the day, giving him energy at night/morning, but apparently he was getting ready for a hunt...
by the time i got downstairs (after a shower in my nice, cleaning supply smelling bathroom), he had already made the kill. normally he will just play with his catches, batting them around, and they eventually get away (he's not the fastest thing on four legs)... this time, he caught and killed it, but still played with it. nearly lost it too (ok, so maybe he's not the brightest thing on four legs either...), tangling it up in the rug in the kitchen, while i was opening up a can of yummy mashed breakfast for him... which he normally dives right in to, but today preferred to keep showing off his kill by knocking it around the kitchen.

man, i'm proud though! the little tyke's a mouser! hooray!

The Ravers vs The Ravers
by ben at 18 October, 2006 - 5:20 AM
There I was, lounging around the pool in 100 degree weather at a desert resort when I decided to write a contemporary rock classic. "Punk Rock Christmas" came to me that afternoon. A few evenings later Graham Daddy, Louis Maxfield and I had the music, the inspiration, and the band - Daddy Maxfield: Graham, vocals, Louie, guitars, Dave Dennard, bass, Mike Campbell, drums - whom I temporarily renamed "The Ravers" for a genuine mod feel.

Plunking $600 down at Pranava Studios, located across from Grauman's Chinese Theater on the third floor of a seedy office building probably once populated by religious zealots and private detectives, we recorded "Punk Rock Christmas" and a heavy interpretation of Silent Night." All went well save for "Silent Night" (ever heard of it?) which had to be sung by Peter Deal (of Threshold). We recorded it in a key too high for Graham and didn't realize it until we were...

hot voice on tablet action
by ben at 17 October, 2006 - 2:23 AM
I downloaded the 2006 OS for my 700 tablet the other day, and i've started playing around with some of the features. My favorite, right now, is the gizmo project. I downloaded this, started playing with it, called Ralph, and man, it was really good. As small as that thing is, it was very good. i walked around the house, still fine. Their pricing plan isn't too bad either - outgoing calls are free to ANYONE who has a gizmo account (how cool is that?), so sign up now! You can get a phone number for incoming calls for $35/year - that's less than $3 a month... and it works anywhere in the world, as long as you're signed in. You don't just have to use it on the tablet (but I will!), you can use it from any computer. Calling a phone that's not in their system is only 1C per minute in the US. 1.6C/m to Ireland! Which means I can call Cliona for cheaper than it costs to call my grandparents from my home phone!

Outside of that, voice chat through google talk works great too - i talked to Stu on that (let's all send him sympathy, he had a bad migraine yesterday), that sounded just as good as talking to Ralph on the phone. All in all, this isn't quite a replacement for a cell phone (until there's universal, free WiFi), but it's pretty damn nice... kudos to the developers for the new version of the OS... I even got an updated version of sudoku working on there!

more .Net 3.0 Apps
by ben at 13 October, 2006 - 2:20 AM
A week or two ago, I found the new york times reader through one of the blogs I read (I want to say Scoble, but since he left MS, I'm doubting it was him). Anyways, I showed it off to one of the managers here at work, and he suggested I pass it on to someone else who works with the head of the company on a weekly show he has (Tuesday mornings, WBFF - the local Fox show) about technology. Anyways, she wanted to meet with me today to go over the thing and what it does, so I'm preparing some examples. While I was researching, i found thirteen23, which is offering a trio of .Net 3.0 powered apps already, and one of them, for our flickr people, is very cool - it's basically Picasa for your flickr... if you have the time, check out their netflix management app.

My fear, however, is that we (MS based programmers) are going to have to learn a lot of design, or at least work with a designer constantly, because it would appear that they're marrying a lot of functionality to the design, with the Windows Presentation Foundation, you can't just write your program and take the design handed to you by a designer and slap it on top. The design is part of your functionality...

Opening set!
by ben at 11 October, 2006 - 3:58 AM
It looks like i've landed the opening set at Shorty's next Friday. Everyone, I'd appreciate it if you pop your head in for at least a minute, this is the first time I'll be spinning outside of my house (or someone else's house)... and might even make money if everyone orders enough drinks! I'll start around 9, play until 10 or so, then I'll be free to be teased and whatnot. So, come on down, check it out, have a drink! The address, if you don't know, is 3301 Foster Ave, Baltimore, 21224. Rich (and anyone that went to Rich's bachelor party), you should recognize the place, hehehe.

Time to hit the decks again. And figure out what to play!

by ralph at 10 October, 2006 - 4:50 AM
Okay, this is very unlike me that I'm doing public begging, but here goes.

I wanted to take this time to let you all know that on Sunday, October 15th I'll be riding the 60 mile route in the 2006 MS Bike Tour. This is the 21st Annual Tour and it's used to raise money for the MS Society. I know that a lot of you don't know, but the reason that I'm riding is because about 20 or so years ago, my mother was diagnosed with MS. For that reason, I'd like to ask for your sponsorship for this ride. Any dollar amount would help, and donations can be made through my personalized page on the ride's website. I just watched it again last night, since that's really not a movie to get a bunch of friends over to watch in a big group with, and I have to say, it's still one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. If you haven't seen it, I really highly suggest putting it on your netflix or to watch list... warning, there's nudity and violence and drugs and, well, let's just put it this way, it's a rough movie. It's not rough for directorial masturbation like John always says "Requiem for A Dream" is, it's just a rough look at a couple and their relationship within Turkish/Muslim life and in Germany. Think "Closer" but... not as cleaned up or so ersatz relationship.

Heroes

Awesome new show. I can't recommend it enough. Playing on no less than three Channels: NBC (Mondays), Sci-Fi (Fridays), and USA (Mondays, a week behind).

Sadly, you've missed your chance on the first episode unless you can find a torrent somewhere, but that doesn't mean you can't catch up. Watch episode 2 tonight on USA, then episode 3 on Sci-Fi on Friday, then you'll be all up-to-date for next Monday's first-showing of episode 4.

Why is it so awesome? I don't know. It's fun. It's interesting. It's as realistic as a story about people with super powers can be. Ben and I just finished Watchmen, and Heroes reminds me of the flaws that those characters had. I mean, not the same flaws, but the idea that these are by all means NOT perfect beings.

Not all of them are great. You can definitely skip number 8, but there's some awesome stuff in most of the other ones. I think number 1 ones my favorite. At the very least, check that one out.

a question
by ben at 03 October, 2006 - 6:33 AM
Amazon recommended the west wing complete collection to me, even though i already own seasons 1-6, and it knows this. However, it might also know that the ex-roomate destroyed the first three discs of season 3 (i've found 1 and 2, badly mutilated, disc 3 has been bodily called up by a higher power)... so i wonder, should i get the whole collection, and distribute seasons 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6, or just get season 7 and buy season 3 again at another date? hard decision...

Joel On Recruiting

Joel Spolsky has an article out, A Field Guide to Developers, and how to treat your developers right an therefore get better and better recruits. I have to say that, other than the offices, G1440 is doing pretty well. We even have Aeron chairs (though i personally find them uncomfortable).

So some food can actually stay in my fridge for more than a night. Maybe I'll need the SensorfreshQ meter to tell me if my meat is still good...
