I've had my sexy HD tv for coming up on two years now. Shortly after buying it, I ordered all the HD programming that Comcast had to offer. It was sexy. But my TiVo Series 2 was not capable of recording HD programming. I told myself that I'd occasionally watch live HD programming in order to justify the cost of the service, but it just never happened.
About a year ago, TiVo came out with their Series 3 receivier to support HD programming. Awesome. I could finally start taking advantage of the HD programming I'd been paying for and not using. It cost $800. Not awesome. But I had been wanting one of these SO bad, so I decided to start prepping to take the plunge.

I'm liking it so far... definitely some good improvements, still some of the same bugs, but overall it's good. I especially like the feature where, if you double click the album art in the Now Playing area, it opens up explorer to the folder where the currently playing song resides...
I don't like that you can't expand the playlist to more than the 5 lines it has, and (at least in XP) it still has some of the re-painting issues (not refreshing the buttons, hanging on some things, that kind of stuff). it feels a little more like windows media player, which i'm not so sure about, but overall, as an upgrade, i give it 4 Llamas.

(There's an overall idea and theme behind this post that will be carried out and discussed outside of public sites as I don't want video game makers to steal my common sense and run with before I have a chance with some friends to try first.)
I'm so sick of the crap that's out there for cell phones now. I'm so frustrated with the graphics laden, funky control setup, and horrible camera control crap that Verizon wants you to pay $8+ on your cell phone. I know that the developers have to use an application language from Qualcomm called Brew but seriously, is there no good game developers left in this world? This is the perfect chance to bring back what helped bring the video game industry to life. The cell phone is a very low end computer device that should play games with content, not graphics.

Yes. Yes I am.
It's not like there isn't plenty of work to do: voicemails to check from last week, depositions to schedule, etc....but I don't wanna. If I hit F5 one more time while staring at CraigsList for some slight change I will officially have become a Stop sign.
any good Webcomics to read?

On October 10th, Nintendo released an update to the Wii to allow USB keyboard support. If your Wii isn't giving you the blue glow yet, it's because they're slowing pushing out the notices so as not to overload their servers. Details of the update can be found on nintendo.com.
Basically the only things that actually USE the keyboard right now are the Wii Message board, the Everybody Votes Channel, and the Internet Channel. But this opens the door for keyboard support in games as well (MMOs anyone?).
The only keybaord they are explicitly stating will work is Logitech's Classic Keyboard 200, but they're saying that any standard USB keyboard should be fine.
I've also seen reports that Logitech's wireless S510 works as well. I'm about 90% sure that's the keyboard Pie has plugged into her desktop, so I'll give it a try and let you know if it works as soon as I can. Because really... who wants wires on their Wii?

So in the neverending saga of household electronics at Fort 502, we had an interesting debacle a few weeks ago, from which you, dear reader, may become the beneficiary. Peter's offering, free of charge, but pickup necessary, a flat-widescreen television, with like, 780p version of HD or something, and even a fancy pants remote!
Full disclosure - he bought the thing refurbished, and replaced it with his even more fancy pants Samsung LCD HD TLA MVP RCMP TV, and we used it upstairs for a while, until one morning it wouldn't turn on. We tried it for a while, nothing, but yesterday, he tells me, he turned it on and it stayed on for 30 minutes, until he turned it off... so you may or may not have to do anything to it, but you might have yourself a bad connection or - as was my case with my receiver - a blown capacitor.
So, fixing it may cost you $0-$100, which is still a pretty good deal for this TV... let me know if you want to come by and pick this up.

I think I have communicated my desire to see Ron Paul as our next President sufficiently to this blog. I have gotten quite involved with the campaign of late, becoming the Organizer for the Anne Arundel County Ron Paul 2008 Meetup group.
I am announcing a fund raising event that I will be running via a crab feast at my home on Saturday October the 20th, 2pm. I am asking $100 minimum donations for the Ron Paul campaign, with a goal of raising $5000.
I think many of you on DTC do not 100% agree with Ron Paul, but at least do find him a refreshing voice against traditional politicians.
See the Meetup Event for more details.

So that was my first trip to "wine country". I had a great time, my friend Marilyn and I went out Thursday night, arriving just after midnight, west coast time. After arguing with a very irritating woman at the rental car kiosk ("no, don't run it as a debit card, just as a visa!" "i sorry, it run as debit, you need different card!") we were on our way from SF into the night, and towards Vallejo.

One of my friend's band is playing at Sonar on Thursday Oct 11th with doors opening at 8pm. The music is much different than he's ever played and their sound is phenomenal, I think at least. The show's only $10 and it's good solid music that won't keep you up late drinking and partying. For that price and for a chance to spend a Thursday night hanging out, listening to new music, and having a few beers, it's definitely worth it. I've included their myspace site which has a taste of their current line up and I'll be there so hopefully this post will help bring a bit extra to the show.

via nin.com and the hotline:
" Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate. Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008. Exciting times, indeed."

apparently I signed up to be in the beta for FriendFeed at some point, because this morning I got an email saying that I was invited in as a beta tester... so, I followed the link, wondering what I had gotten myself into...
It's actually pretty cool, and so far, dead simple to use. You register, look at some other peoples' profiles and decide if they're worthy of being stalked... err... followed by you, and then you put in your own feeds - this is the cool part. You have a blog? just put the URL. Flickr, Twitter, whatever? Just your username, no bothering with passwords, etc. Now, I know you might say "but i like having my feeds of all of my friends separate!" or "i don't even want to follow you fools anyways" or "potato chips and grape jelly sandwiches!" but that's fine, don't - ok, maybe not that last one - sign up... i won't pay attention to your dull life anyways. for the rest of you, this is a really easy way to keep track of several people, across MANY sites, in one place.

Nintendo is going to start shipping slip-resistant covers with all new Wii systems and remotes. If you already have remotes, you can use the following form to request free jackets for them:
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/jacket/jacketrequest.jsp
This is awesome, but I'm sure it'll piss off all the third-party sellers who have been producing these.

Do you remember being told, at some point since you've had credit, that having No credit is worse than actually having Bad credit? I've noticed that having NO reputation online for your store is just as bad, or worse, than having a bad reputation. As long as you're not an out and out scam factory, you'll probably have some good and some bad reviews out there, but as was just the case, a friend is going with a well known rather than unknown company to buy some software, where the price difference is about $30...
What's your price for reputation? e.g. if the price difference between store A and its closest competition was $300, would that price be enough? is it a sliding scale? should i call the guy from XKCD to work on that math?
Have you been burned by this (selling or buying)? or avoided it altogether?
