Hey guys!
The medical insurance industry is messed up. I haven't been able to find a good place to answer basic questions. So I turn to all y'all.
Basically what we need is medical insurance that will cover catastrophic and pregnancy in many countries, including but not limited to Haiti, Bolivia, Peru, Cuba, Venezuela, Brazil, Taiwan, Japan, Mongolia, Russia, Poland, Czech Republic, France, and the US. We will be unemployed during this whole time.
Any ideas? Where should I start looking?
Thanks!

Ben and I have enjoyed the recent phenomenon of ridiculous cooking shows on Youtube such as My Drunk Kitchen and Regular Ordinary Swedish Meal Time.
Coming next: Irish Meal Time. It's just Ben drinking a Guinness in a different part of his apartment each week, all the while making obscure references.

Is Obama about to break the law? (CNN)
Glenn Greenwald correctly points out that the CNN headline, and their coverage, is remarkably honest in their choice of words.

I hadn't thought of this until Glenn Greenwald brought it up, but a military dude leading the CIA is generally not seen to be a good thing. And of course Democrats that used to have a problem with it no longer do, now that it is Obama pushing it instead of Bush.

Caganer - AKA, the pooping guy.
"A Caganer ... is a small statue found in Catalonia, in neighbouring areas with Catalan culture such as Andorra, and in other parts of Spain, Portugal and Italy. The figure is depicted in the act of defecation."
And, of course they do famous figures, too.

I swear, you could copy this shit straight to The Onion and it would seem like a perfectly normal parody. I mean, you have the anchor talking about protester violence while the video is showing protesters getting beaten down.
And, seriously? They are going to highlight the - gasp! - $50,000 in damage?

Reasons for Flickr:
A lot of people use it.
It is supposed to be good, I guess?
Reasons for Picasa Web Albums:
I use the Picasa desktop app.
I am moving to more Google applications (GMail, calendar, docs), so it might be good to go all Google.
Opinions? One major consideration is the quality of the "premium" accounts, because I'll probably want/need one.

So in my class yesterday, History of the US until Reconstruction (1877), the professor uses the first 30-40 minutes of our 2.5-hour class to: (1) explain the current credit crisis and (2) do a little bit of Democrat cheer leading. For point (1) I find it annoying merely because it isn't relevant at ALL to the material the course is supposed to cover. Or, maybe it is in some way, but it would probably be a stretch and in any case he made no attempt to relate it to the class as a whole. Even though I find this to be annoying, I could have lived with it. Certainly it is an important topic that we could all use a primer on, so there is at least that.
It is point (2) that really bugged me. As a preface to his lecture on the credit crisis he was going over unequal distribution of income as a general concept. He threw in the fact (or opinion or whatever it is, I haven't looked it up) that since World War II, whenever a Democrat is president the bottom portion of the population will see some of the economic growth reflected in their income. And whenever a Republican is president there will still be economic growth but the bottom portion of the population will not see the growth reflected in their income. Later on he pulls out an Obama quote (used in a positive way) to describe the crisis or suggest a solution. Altogether it was a pretty blatant display of cheer leading for the Democrats.
I feel that he has abused his position as professor to speak to an audience that was required to be there in pursuit of a different goal. Going beyond that, he seemed to be using the classroom to bring impressionable young minds to his side in the upcoming presidential election.
So this brings me to my question: What should I do? I feel that there are a few options, most of which involve writing a letter:
1) Write a letter to the professor.
2) Write a letter to the History Department chair.
3) Write a letter to someone in the university administration.
4) Do nothing.
I am mostly leaning towards option 2. What do you think I should do? Basically I want to run this by you all to make sure I am not misinterpreting the ethics of this situation, and to make sure I don't do something inappropriate to this situation. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

I've launched a new blog, sfdrumandbass.com. From the first post:
This site has been born out of my frustration in finding a centralized place to locate information on drum and bass in San Francisco. I intend first and foremost to make this a place where you can find and answer to the question: Are there any dnb events in the city tonight/tomorrow/this weekend?
Also I intend to post reviews of shows and clubs that I go to. Stay tuned. The first event I will be going to is this Saturday 9/20 at Underground SF: Bassism

I went to the farmer's market this morning. They were selling live chickens. I am thinking of buying one, killing it, dressing it and eating it. What say you? It would certainly be a feature on DTC, video and all. I think I would like to find a partner in crime though.
If I read the sign correctly, the chickens were $6 each.

Thought you all would appreciate this one:
Over the past month, Mexico has seen several incidents of anti-emo bashings and harassment by members of other subcultures like metal heads, skaters, punks and Goths, as well as ordinary working-class adolescents.
It isn't The Onion, or satire at all for that matter, but it sure does read like it.
Update: WTF, it is on Counterpunch, too?

I like using different greetings, other than the standard fare such as "hello," "hey," and the like. Here are some of the ones I use:
ahoy
greetings
and a recent addition: Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum. I take caution to not say this one to young women.
What are your favorite non-traditional greetings?

"The followers of this violent ideology are a threat to civilized people everywhere. All civilized nations must work together to stop them by sharing intelligence about their networks, and choking off their finances, and bringing to justice their operatives."
You know, if that was referring to Bush and his cronies, it would make a whole lot of sense. Unfortunately, that was Bush himself, addressing the United Nations.
At least he didn't push the case for war against Iran. They were only mentioned once.

This shit has really been pissing me off. Pissing me off enough to crosspost. Not that I ever really needed a good reason.
A couple days ago, the mercenary company Blackwater was at the center of a rather large incident in Iraq allegedly involving a dozen or two dead Iraqi civilians. There are conflicting reports, depending on who you want to believe, from the US State Department, the Iraqi government, and eyewitnesses at the scene. Some say the Blackwater employees were fired on first, some say they were responding to an exploded bomb, some say the bomb was too far away for that to be the reason, some say that it was because a civilian car (mother and child) ignored an order from police to stop and was slowing moving into the intersection, prompting the firefight. I have my preferences on who and what to believe, you have yours.

I'll readily and proudly admit it. I am a liberal. Call me a Chomsky liberal, a Nader liberal, an anarchist. I'm all of those (at least in theory, what with my corporate job and all). Or call me a progressive. Whatever, you get the point.
Anyway so despite all of the above, I am looking for a couple of good conservative blogs to keep up on. I am looking for two categories:
- reasonable/thinking conservatives. i.e. Ron Smith, Rich Matthews, Ron Paul.
- mainstream/ridiculous conservatives. i.e. Limbaugh, Hannity, Cheney, McCain, etc.
Note that I am not looking for these people in particular. Just these two lines of thinking. I figure the first category will give me a good "other side of the coin" to consider (even though I would probably agree with most "reasonable conservatives" on Iraq). And the second category will give me insight on what conservatives in power are thinking. That is all. I await your suggestions, thanks!

There are two issues that are top on my list for things that need changing. The Iraq War (let's get the hell out of there) and global warming. As I walk through the city streets almost every day, rarely do I see anything being done by ordinary citizens on either of these two issues. How are things going to change if we don't make them change?

I have been frustrated with this one for months. Google images accounts for about 40% of the hits to my site (Debian + Apache2). I really don't want this to be so. My site is hosted on a 384k upload DSL connection and I don't want to use my precious bandwidth on this. So I went the way of "robots.txt." That should have been an easy fix:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /images/
But...they keep on going. For months. I have tried different iterations of this (/images vs. /images/, Googlebot-Image vs *).
Then I figured I would try to just prevent hotlinking in general. Unfortunately, this isn't very easy. When I implemented something I found on the web, I couldn't use images from my own domain either. This is so god damned frustrating. Any ideas?

Since I will probably be laying down $380 within a month or two for Windows Vista Ultimate, I thought it would be a good idea to read through the license agreement ( full text here).
I was actually amazed, at first, at how tame the agreement was. I expected it to be worse. Then I came upon this section (read on)...probably the worst part of the whole thing.
Still, I don't think it will be enough to prevent me from buying (or licensing, as the case may be) the software.

On a recent The Show with Zefrank, I learned that President Bush is evidently not preparing for a Democratic takeover of the House or Senate. It is claimed that this is because they are in the "game" to win (and are therefore only planning for the possibility of a win). I ask this question to our faithful readers; Is the Bush administration not preparing for the possibility of a Democratic takeover of the House or Senate because:
a) They are idiots.
b) They know the Democrats aren't going to take over the House or Senate because it is rigged.
c) They are lying. They actually are preparing, but are saying otherwise for some purpose.

I am currently half-intentionally unemployed. I say half intentionally because I was rather picky about some jobs that I didn't go for, and narrowly missed three that would have been sweet.
So I decided to take a few months off to get my CCNP so that the next time around I will have a better chance of getting the sweet job that I want.
Anyway, all is going pretty well so far as far as the studying goes. It would be going more pretty well if I could concentrate better. I was trying to think today about ways to increase my attention span. Here's what I have thought of so far, and I would appreciate your comments on your experiences with these things in improving your concentration:
- vitamins
- energy drinks
- exercise in the morning
Except for today, I have at least used a good environment for studying - mostly libraries and sometimes coffee shops.
We study so much in our lives, especially in college, that it is surprising to me that there is so little said about how to study effectively. I mean, you never really see any studies out there on how to study better. Maybe the scientists got side-tracked.

I read about a Zombie flash mob happening today at Powell and Market streets here in San Francisco. I didn't have anything to do today until later, so I thought I might as well hop on the 45 and check it out.
I got there 5 minutes before the mayhem broke out. I was surprised by the amount of zombies that showed up. Great fun.

I read several friends' blogs and I read Boing Boing. The problem with friends' blogs is that they can be inconsistantly updated. And Boing Boing is great, but sometimes it's just not what I am looking for, like when they have 9 posts about anagram transit maps, and 7 posts about earwax removal.
What blogs do you all read that are updated regularly and aren't going for the "funny" or "entertaining" angle?

The definition of civil war is not very well...defined. It is pretty obvious, to me at least, that it is a political question when one asks, "Is Iraq in a civil war?"
So, after seeing this article in today's New York Times, I ask you, the distinguished readers of Easily Amusing:
If 40 or so Americans were found murdered once every two weeks, would you say America is in a civil war?

What do you use for contact (addresses and phone numbers, not the vision correcting things) management?
I am looking for something that will fall into one of these two requirements:
- Some portable application that I can stick on my USB drive. Preferably with support for OSes other than Windows, but this is not a deal breaker.
- A web-based app that I can install on my server at home. I run Unix servers in my closet...so I don't want to install Exchange and do Outlook Web Access just for this.
Also, I would like something that is compatible with some sort of standard...either an open standard or able to export to a pst file at some point.
I've searched a bit and can't find anything...what do you all use to manage your contacts? Or am I am going to have to revert to *gasp* paper and pencil?

Update...
Honda Civic Si. 197 horsepower. 0 - 60 in 6.9 seconds. Slalom as fast as the $86,000 Dodge Viper. Yay.
Well...didn't see it coming, but I got a raise. And two days ago, my rear passenger tire went flat, and it looks like it is going flat every two days. Also my check engine light just came on. So I am thinking...why not get a new car?
My current car is a 1994 Lexus ES300 with 85,000 miles, worth about $5,000 - $6,000. And I think I will put $10,000 down. I am looking at:
$33,295 BMW 325i - RWD, 215HP, manual 20/30
$31,359 Lexus IS250 - RWD, 204HP, manual, 20/29
$22,485 Ford Mustang - 210HP, manual, 19/28
Those prices are after I have added the features I want. I would like to keep it at $33k max...but preferably closer to $30k. What do you all think between those three? Or should I be looking at something else?
Also, I have always found the whole service/warranty thing to be rather boring, but it is obviously pretty important. Any insight on service and warranty with those car companies?

I suggest that you all read this interview with Linus Torvalds. It is about GPLv3 and its possible use with Linux. I found myself thinking a question...and then they would ask the question.
My only gripe is that they refer to Linux as being Linus', and they refer to it as an operating system. Linux is a kernel, and GNU/Linux is an operating system.

From my site:
Some of you may have heard about the mudslide on Leyte island in the Philipines with an estimated death toll of 1,350 people. Many of you haven’t. It happened on Friday, February 17, 2006.
...
So depending on your news source, you might get a good sense of the importance of this story. Or you might think it is just a minor occurrence, perhaps judging by a small link to the side with relation to a story that seems much less important. Or you might not even hear about it at all, even if you happen to read the all the links posted on all of the relevant sections on the Washington Post website.

Digg.com sucks. My main complaint is that it is filled with stupid people. I posted Rich's link below to digg, and so far it has one digg (by me), whereas a snake getting caught in a spider web (the next entry) has three diggs.
Digg the hell out of it.

CNN.com has launched a new service called CNN Pipeline. I have waited a long time for something like this. What a beautiful concept. On-demand, low-cost, commercial-free, online news. Four simultaneous video streams, three of which are unedited. It is $25 for a whole year. I will be signing up for this when I get home, especially since it has a free trial.
I have always thought that our high-speed Internet connections weren't really being utilized. But now we're getting there. I think we're really seeing the beginning of something big here. If I could get this kind of service for other shows, I would be all over it.

Has anyone ever had any experience in employing a personal assistant, or maybe more accurately, an "errand bitch"?
I was just thinking about how awesome it would be to hire someone for maybe four hours every week or two, for about $12-15/hour. I'd want basic stuff done like ship stuff I sold on eBay, buy random shit at random stores that I need, and make reservations or appointments for me.
Thoughts? Questions? Complaints?

Ripped from my blog:
Today, it was announced that Wikipedia is restricting article creation to registered users only. Many might choose to argue one position or the other on this issue. I happen to not feel strongly either way. However, I find the process by which it was decided to be questionable.

Here is a list of websites that I find to be best for these basic purposes. New tools are constantly coming out that are later and greater than what is currently out, so this is simply a current snapshot.
weather National Weather Service
maps/directions Google Maps
reference Wikipedia
news Google News
all-in-one homepage Google Personalized Home
sports Yahoo Sports
Do you think I am missing something? I generally give higher points to websites that don't have moving ads and are easy to use.

When I started using my own blog instead of this one for general day-to-day crap, the usefulness of this blog to me as far as being an author declined. It was then only useful to me for the amount of comments, as in if I required feedback to a post of mine. After several posts which received few or no comments (as all of the surrounding posts did), I realized that almost all of my content would generally be better suited to my own blog, rather than this one.
Well, this blog still does have a different audience than mine, and probably still at least a few more readers. So now my policy has generally been, if I think something that I write is particularly useful or of high quality, I will post it on my own blog and link to it here, or if it is short enough, simply copy/paste to this blog. Whereas before I was posting here for my own good most of the time, the concept now is that I post here when I think it will be useful for others (barring my recent podcast post).
So my question is: Is this a good policy? Or would you all rather I only posted "original" content here, rather than just linking to my own site, or copying/pasting what I just posted on my site? I don't want to feel like I am just whoring myself out to the EA crowd to get more traffic to my own site.

Well, I don't think this counts as an ad since I am not selling anything:
Advertising is an insult to the intelligence of all of us. We are expected to, and many of us do, buy products based on 30-second snippets that say very little about why a certain product is good.
...
Corporate advertisements on public property are endorsements of whatever is being advertised. How can our government possibly endorse the practices of corporations such as McDonalds, which purchased advertising space on subway cars in Washington DC? Could we perhaps personify a corporation? McDonalds has unfair labor practices, and promotes unhealthy eating. Maybe we could replace the images on the subway with a slave owner eating red meat and cheese. Maybe then people viewing the ads would see what is really being shown to them.

Two things that don't mix as far as I am concerned are being tired and being cold. When I wake up, I want it to be 75 degrees in my apartment. And just because I have to go to work doesn't mean that I should leave the feeling of being cuddled up in my blankets at my apartment.
I wear an undershirt and a comfortable jacket or coat to work. Then at about 9:30 or 10am, when I am naturally ready to start my day, I can "get out of bed" by just taking my coat off.

OK, I know I am overloading you on the Dieselboy right now (especially judging from the pointed comments in the last post), but these lyrics are especially appropriate right now in my life, kind of like a discussion between two parts of my mind:
"And then he said, then he said that the world is coming to an end."
"Do you think the world is coming to an end?"
"No . . . That's stupid."
Sorry, move along.

I am a habitual away message checker. Yes, that's right, I admitted it. And it is so easy with gaim because you just mouse over the person's name. I just wish there was an easy way, like an "awayblock" extension (think adblock for away messages) to block certain people's away messages. I get tired of the whiney ones . . . and it would be nice if they could just be replaced with: "muhgcee at y's away message is probably too lame to read. Move along." That would brighten my day.

Check them out here. I have tried to make everything a good deal, but if you think any of the prices are too high, let me know and I will probably lower them. I will update this page a few times with new parts, and I will post a comment whenever I do to "bump" the thread.

Your pristine browser Firefox isn't as good as you may have thought it was. It seems to have major memory leak issues. Leave the same instance of Firefox open for too long, and watch your memory usuage go up and not come back down. Even after closing all tabs, memory usage stays high. The solution? Close and restart. Not very elegant afterall. That is not to say I am going back to IE.

I downloaded 300MB of folk music, and it is a nice change so far. I like the titles, such as: - I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground
- Fishing Blues (literally about half of the song titles end with "Blues")
- Drunkard's Special
- King Kong Kitchie Kitchie Ki-Me
- A Lazy Farmer Boy
- My Name Is John Johanna
- John Hardy Was A Desperate Little Man
- Gonna Die With My Hammer In My Hand
- Old Dog Blue
- Indian War Whoop
I like this stuff, because they sound like real people and their real, unmessed with voices and instruments. But it is staticy as all hell.

Consider the saying: "Righty tighty, lefty loosey." This saying is actually pretty useless. Suppose you are screwing a screw into a piece of wood. So you want to go in the "tighty" direction. That means, according to the saying, that you want to turn the screwdriver to the right. But, what is the right turn relative to? The saying, in order to be correct, would have to make right relative to the top of the screw. The point at the top of the screw has an instantaneous velocity in the positive x direction, or to the right.
But who is supposed to know that the saying referencing the top of the screw? If referencing the bottom of the screw, it would be "Righty loosey, lefty tighty."
I think the saying should be "Using the top of the screw as our reference point, righty tighty, lefty loosey." Or to make it even more clear, why not just "clockwise tight?" That seems easier.

- He sells testicle jewelry at ballsies.com. I am not going to buy any myself, but it is still funny.

Fucking lazy-ass American non-voters got nuthin' on the Iraqis. We have to brave getting off the damn couch while they have to brave suicide bombers and they still make it out in much higher numbers than us.
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Iraqis danced and clapped with joy Sunday as they voted in their country's first free election in a half-century, defying insurgents who launched eight suicide bombings and mortar strikes at polling stations. The attacks killed at least 36 people.Polling stations officially closed as of 5 p.m., but the elecion commission said anyone still in line would be allowed to vote. An Iraqi election official said that 72 percent of eligible Iraqi voters had turned out so far nationwide.

Most of us here on Easily Amusing (including myself) like to bitch and complain about the current administration. But I have not personally noticed any changes in my life that I can attribute to Bush's policies. Has anyone else noticed any significant changes in their own lives that they can attribute to the political situation of the country? The closest I can come is rising tuition costs thanks to our Republican governor. Not that I necessarily disagree with that position . . .

Starting in less than a week, I will be working from 7pm-7am half of the days (not every other day though). I will be completely changing my sleep schedule. I will probably sleep from about 8am-5pm every day. So on my off days, I will be wide awake the whole night, able to party the night away. But, I doubt any of my friends will want to stay up as late as me. Does anyone know of a "Night Owl Group" of sorts? What I am looking for is a group of people that likes to or has to stay up until the morning every day, but doesn't feel like sitting in front of the computer playing World of Warcraft every night. I think it would be neat to have maybe weekly or twice-weekly events for a group like this to get together and do "social" things. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

So I went to pay my MBNA bill today (loan for iPod), and noticed it was due on August 31 (that's today). So, I figured I had better pay the bill online. I went to pay online, and of course, their website is not functioning properly. So, I decide to pay by phone. There was a fucking $15 charge to pay by phone. But, it was better to pay the $15 charge than to get charged a $49 dollar late fee. Does anyone else find these fees to be ridiculous? Also, does anyone else use MBNA? What are your experiences?

I have done something news-worthy! I was one of the assholes that volunteered to go through the petitions to create a Populist Party in Maryland (to get Nader on the ballot) and find the wrongly invalidated signatures. Baltimore Sun article (registration required)

I am looking for a PDA. Here are my requirements:
- ability to add Wifi or built in Wifi
- ability to add one more accessory through USB or expansion slot
- able to sync with Linux (like Palm) or relatively easy to install Linux on the PDA (like with an iPaq)
I'd also like for it to be as cheap as possible, hopefully under $100! I don't mind a non-new item and I don't mind eBay. Can someone make a good suggestion to me? Thanks in advance.

I have discovered that you can save yourself loads of money by buying your razors on eBay. For instance, at a grocery store, these razors would go for about $63. Please don't bid on them.

It is one thing to have a horrible website, but most horrible websites obviously doesn't much matter, i.e. - no one's is getting useful work-related info from it.

I noticed today that Gillette has a line of razors for men and women called "Custom". Except, of course, they are anything but custom. Sold in a multipack, you pull one off the shelf and there are dozens more exactly like it to be picked up by the next customer who, of course, has a different face and hence might be able to benefit from a razor that is "customized" to them. Does this seem strange to anyone else?

OK now everyone pat me on the back for harassing our T1 provider and hence getting our site back online . . . Now that that is over with - I just completed the most gruelling drive of my life. Over 700 miles in 11 hours with one driver and one stop. Oh yeah. Sorry, I just feel proud of myself. Anyway, I am here with Rich now in Georgia, currently sitting by the pool making use of the wireless. Good stuff.

So I am using a Mac at work (and I am loving it). It is using Mac OS 10.2.something. I currently have the dock at the bottom, hiding (as in, when I mouse over it comes up.) I did this because otherwise if I maximize a window, I couldn't click on stuff at the bottom because the window was under the dock. But, sometimes the little bouncy icons don't bounce because it is hidden. What I would like to do is stick the dock on the left, but not in the middle (not good for window placement). Anyone know how I can stick it on the left side (vertically), but starting at the bottom of the screen? I think this would allow me to unhide the dock and not have it get in the way of other windows.

It appears that a swastika has been found in one of Microsoft's fonts. Using the "Bookshelf Symbol 7" font, typing the "~" key (upper left of keyboard) reveals one of the swastikas (there are two). For a Bookshelf Symbol 7 font list, go here. What irks me, though, is that this is deemed a critical update by Microsoft. As if it gives Nazis free reign on my computer . . . Knowledge Base article

How to be "1337" - This article is pretty accurate, except I think they need to follow it with one of those "How 1337 are you?" quizes.

OK so I've got Fedora (offshoot of Redhat Linux) installed on my home computer now. It comes with xmms, which was a great media player until they decided they weren't going to do mp3s anymore. So I searched around and landed on kaffeine. Well, I don't really like it, but I haven't seen anything else around. Does anyone have a suggestion as to which Linux media player I should be using?

I define fear as being scared of something that could quite possibly happen. So, that is why I am not scared of a meteor falling on my house. Here are the top four things I am scared of:

I am not sure whether this is a valid argument or merely a conspiracy theory. But, according to this guy, we are all going to die once we run out of inexpensive oil. I guess my take on his article is that he has many valid points but he assumes the worst about almost every one of these points. What do you all think? Warning: This is a long read.

Anyone know of a good place on the Internet where I can get a candy/rose combo for a decent price ($50 or less) delivered fresh? I have been looking around a bit and most of the places seem pretty expensive. Anyone tried florist.com? They seemed like a reasonable price but I haven't heard of them. Also, does every place just use overnight delivery or do some of them send the florist out to deliver it? I was under the impression that proflowers did this, but maybe not.

I think I have posted about this before but I will try again. Who here is interested in some basketball pickup games? I am playing tomorrow (Sunday) at 9:30AM at Savage park. This would be a good time to start playing some basketball with me! Ben, I think you are a good candidate to play.

I am going on a snowboarding trip to New York (Ellicottville), about an hour south of Buffalo. I was originally going to go with DocScott, but his mom is getting major surgery that he needs to stay home for. So, as it stands now, I am going to go by myself. I think I will have fun anyway, but to cut down on the costs and to add to the fun of the trip, I am open to someone joining me. It is from Monday Jan 19 through Thursday or Friday Jan 22 or 23. I have a slopeside lodge, and it is about a 6-7 hour drive each way. Anyway, I do not strictly require half the money of the lodging, in fact anything close to free and up will get you in on the trip (but please be generous, I am not trying to profit here, just covering expenses). I hope I have found an interested party, if so post something on here and we will get in touch.
