Version Control
by n0manarmy at 23 May, 2012 - 2:18 AM
Any suggestions on a good version control application? I've got some coding projects going on at work and I want to setup a version control application that we can use either via web or through eclipse. The code will be mostly java but there might be something we have to work with a website. I've been playing with git and subversion but i'm having heartburn getting them setup on the ubuntu web server that I have running.

Coding practice
by n0manarmy at 09 May, 2012 - 5:08 AM
Any suggestion on good sites to use to practice coding? I found some java sites but they contain a lot of lessons that increase in difficulty. This made me think. Would there be a market for a site that allowed the community to submit either code snippets or program requests that the community could work on? Obviously it could be abused by homework requests or business requests but there would be attempts at controlling this abuse. There could be a community leader board for points for completion and/or rating of quality of work. The thought would be that the site would be a place that programmers of all ilk could go to regularly to work on a coding problem that would not be overly complex and time consuming in order to practice.

Bug tracking software
by n0manarmy at 26 December, 2011 - 8:11 AM
Any suggestions on good bug tracking software? I'm using a notebook and a pencil right now for bug tracking and feature thoughts. I do have a bugzilla installation I use for work, however there's no offline solution that I can think of. I'd like something that's offline and can sync when online access is available. I'm using Eclipse as my IDE.

So I'm making a game
by n0manarmy at 21 December, 2011 - 2:51 AM
It's java and I'm making it for the purpose of determining how difficult it is to convert straight to android (should be a cinch) and whether or not I have the capability to be a developer and make games. I'm making good progress but I keep debating as to whether or not I want to host the code on a site and attempt to list either public or private (friend) help, or whether or not I should even host the code and do it all myself?

The Motorola Droid - Consumer Ready But Business Beware
by n0manarmy at 23 November, 2009 - 2:25 PM
I've been using the Motorola Droid for over a week now and personally I love it. I find the features, such as the touch screen and the interface, to be somewhat unintuitive to start but easy to grasp. The call quality has been superb, there are times though that answering the phone can be tricky since it involves sliding a finger across the screen. Answering could be problematic if you're cooking or if your hands are wet. The speaker phone does an excellent job and it doesn't distort like I've experienced with other phones such as the LG 8300, Blackberry Storm, and Blackberry Tour. There's articles surfacing on the web that Verizon will gladly take an additional $15 a month from if you use your Droid phone to connect to exchange because they can. I hate patents
by n0manarmy at 12 August, 2009 - 8:58 AM
I hate them because they've become nothing but bullshit now. I4i filed a patent in 1998 that outlined a means for "manipulating the architecture and the content of a document separately from each other" invoking XML as a means allowing users to format text documents. I mean seriously...what hell?! Do they employ idiots in the patent office? I'm going to see if I can patent the concept of taking ones hand and using it to hold an object to them wipe ones ass. That way if no one wants to get sued by me, they'll have to wipe their ass with their bare hands. Ugh.

Haaaaaaalp! To do list question
by n0manarmy at 15 April, 2009 - 6:59 AM
I'm constantly dealing with questions and requests, people wanting this, a price quote for that, it's a never ending onslaught of questions for things to do. I get big things, small things, extended periods of time things and short one minute diddy things. I'm having a hell of a time keeping track of all these things. I've got a note book that I attempt to keep updated it's just not cutting it. I've got post-it notes all over pages with notes to other pages and it's not effective. I want to find a program that's fairly interactive that I can create digital notes. Color coding would be nice and being able to shift them around in priorities would also benefit. Either something plugins in and expands on Outlooks tasks would be nice or something else completely separate. I can't rely directly on outlook tasks because I use that to track the emails that come flying in constantly and it's cluttered enough with just those. Anyone have any thoughts?

In the fabled words of the e-trade baby "I just bought stock...."
by n0manarmy at 28 January, 2009 - 7:12 AM
I figured, if any time was the time to buy stock, it's now. The tech sector has taken a huge beating along with the rest of the stock market. AMD's stock is roughly $2.30+ a share (which I bought 150 shares of at $2.00 exactly.) The rest of the companies that I know and love, as well as follow, have been thoroughly trounced to the point that it's almost somewhat affordable. We all know AMD and Intel aren't going to go out of business anytime soon, we see them in every facet of our environment. Also NVidia, Microsoft, and HP are still going strong, they're stock's just hurting because everyone else is. I opened up an Ameritrade account and put in the minimum required. I was a little leery at first but now I don't regret it. If the stocks go any lower, which they haven't and I don't foresee that they will, we all know what companies are inherently the foundation of the tech markets and that they'll rebound sooner or later. There may be no better time than now. Just a heads up.

Enterprise Image/Media Management
by n0manarmy at 26 January, 2009 - 1:38 AM
Anyone have any experience or suggestions for an enterprise image/media management solution? I'm browsing through about 60,000+ images that I've accumulated from our PR Director that left, trying to find one specific image and it's dawned on me that all this shit shouldn't be sitting on her hard drive but on a server somewhere. Is there anything like Flickr or Gallery2 that's enterprise oriented?

I've got a desktop that's aging and struggles to play World of Warcraft without dropping everything down and I've got a sweet ass laptop without a 3D card (funny how that works out) and it's running Ubuntu. by n0manarmy at 19 August, 2008 - 2:42 AM
So I've been playing around with tineye.com which has a database of over 700 million photos, which I'm assuming is still growing. The neat thing is that I can either link photos from the web with the cool firefox/IE pluggin that they have or upload photos that I've cataloged and see who else has them posted or has changed them. This is quite amusing to me cause I used to spend a lot of time doing the photoshop fridays and comedy gold mines on somethingawful.com.

So I wanna learn a language
by n0manarmy at 16 June, 2008 - 11:03 AM
I've been doing more and more on the web and I don't want to be an apps junky anymore. I want to learn a language that'll let me do somethings on the web that are cool and fun. I've heard of Ajax, Flash, Ruby (on Rails), .Net (?) and I just can't decide. Right now I'm leaning towards http://www.rubyonrails.org/ because it looks easy BUT I don't want to put the effort in to a language that's going to die off much like C++ in highschool but I don't want to get involved with a language that's too specific or complicated. I don't want to be a hard core programmer but if I wanted to setup my own website without dumping some app from some page and keeping it simple, what should I look into?

by n0manarmy at 18 April, 2008 - 1:11 AM
I've given up on coffee because it does nothing but tear my stomach up due the to acidity. I've started drinking tea a lot more at work now and I have this feeling that just getting hot water from the water dispenser isn't really doing my tea justice. I've been digging around on Amazon and I found the Sunbeam HTM3 Hot Tea Maker. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? I'm usually drinking tea all morning long. I like to get a couple cups out of my tea bag before I pitch it and I've only done bagged tea, not loose tea.

What should I do? What should I do?
by n0manarmy at 20 December, 2007 - 9:01 AM
I just got out of a 3 week (with one week of training) setup of LanDesk and I have to say that I like it quite a bit. The application is going to touch multiple facets of the university and be used by multiple IT associates. I'm lucky as hell over here in Dental because we were chosen to house the servers which means we get to administer the entire thing. Here's my dilemma: The core server functions as basically the spinal cord for the entire system and has to be made available to everyone. I had a DNS entry placed for the campus to point directly to the core server as http://landesk.umaryland.edu. Currently that section of the site is blank and says under construction (the basic IIS page) and LanDesk isn't going to put anything there. Now I can put up a simple HTML page with links further in to landesk.umaryland.edu or I could put a wiki up there, or a blog, or whatever...I don't really know what to do. First off here are the requirements. What I put up has to be compatible with Microsoft SQL because we've got that running on the LanDesk database server and I can easily tie it in. Secondly, it can't be too intensive because the server was designed for LanDesk and I don't want to push it. Thirdly, I'm hoping that whatever I put there will ultimately be a useful tool in the long run.

Cell phone game manufacturers are crap
by n0manarmy at 24 October, 2007 - 1:40 AM
(There's an overall idea and theme behind this post that will be carried out and discussed outside of public sites as I don't want video game makers to steal my common sense and run with before I have a chance with some friends to try first.)

I'm so sick of the crap that's out there for cell phones now. I'm so frustrated with the graphics laden, funky control setup, and horrible camera control crap that Verizon wants you to pay $8+ on your cell phone. I know that the developers have to use an application language from Qualcomm called Brew but seriously, is there no good game developers left in this world? This is the perfect chance to bring back what helped bring the video game industry to life. The cell phone is a very low end computer device that should play games with content, not graphics.

The Courtesy Line at Sonar tonight (Mike Borlik and his band)
by n0manarmy at 11 October, 2007 - 2:27 AM
One of my friend's band is playing at Sonar on Thursday Oct 11th with doors opening at 8pm. The music is much different than he's ever played and their sound is phenomenal, I think at least. The show's only $10 and it's good solid music that won't keep you up late drinking and partying. For that price and for a chance to spend a Thursday night hanging out, listening to new music, and having a few beers, it's definitely worth it. I've included their myspace site which has a taste of their current line up and I'll be there so hopefully this post will help bring a bit extra to the show.

Advanced macroing applications
by n0manarmy at 12 September, 2007 - 1:06 AM
I'm looking for any suggestions on advanced macroing applications. I've used ACTools in the passed but I've never been much of a programmer so I've always had to get Jay's help. I think what would need to be done with actools to macro what I want would be too much of a hassle anyways though. I basically want to create an auto roller for the screen shot included below which will involve taking a screen shot, reading the numbers within the screen shot and if the stats are high enough then to continue on and keep the character*.

Screen shot

If anyone has suggestions to isolate the black numbers and then take the number and match it to what I or respond with the keyboard response of "R" (to reroll) that would be awesome. One site note though too. The numbers will increase and decrease in size as well as shift within that box from right to left randomly every 30 seconds.

* Yes, screw you all, I am a dork!

I was just browsing around to find out more about Iris card scanners and I found this intriguing site. Apparently we live in a pretty shaky world.

I'm bored (at work)
by n0manarmy at 25 January, 2007 - 8:17 AM
I used to MUD back in the day, then played some random games that involved some form or another of windowed mode and generally tackled lighter tasks in the bigger MMO's. All of these things I did at work but they never took up too much of my time because I could step away when I needed too. Well, I've run in to a snag. I don't MUD anymore, I don't have any idea of good decent windowed games, and I'm not playing any MMO's either (and don't really plan on it.)

Any suggestions on good fantasy or mech based games that could possibly be online related or with a decent plot line that would be great at work?

Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born
by n0manarmy at 22 January, 2007 - 11:04 AM
Well, I've been waiting a very long time for this and it's finally done. Marvel Comics is releasing the Dark Tower series in comic form. I haven't bought comics in so long and finally i can get back in to it with a series that I've loved and enjoyed reading so much.

The site for the comic is http://www.marvel.com/darktower

I know I'll be camping out for this (or sending the girl friend if i can't get off of work.)

SyncToy! Where have you been all my life?
by n0manarmy at 19 January, 2007 - 10:07 AM
I always thought Microsoft's backup philosophy sucked. The application they provide proves this. A quick Google search showed Microsoft's SyncToy. I have to admit, I love it! This'll eliminate 90% of the backup headaches I have at work with my users because they're too incompetent to understand the more robust applications but not smart enough to manually back up things themselves. Cheers to you Microsoft, you actually did well!

New years eve
by n0manarmy at 06 December, 2006 - 12:04 AM
What's everyone doing for new years? I've got a couple ideas but from what I hear, the bars in Baltimore are completely different, as in most charge a flat fee for all you can eat and drink style entry and limit the amount of people. So the girl and I might go to a cabin with some friends but I want to hear what everyone else is planning just in case.

Cell phone games suck!
by n0manarmy at 07 November, 2006 - 1:13 AM
So is it me or are most of the games you can get on your verizon phone absolute crap? I'm quite upset by the fact that it's nothing but graphics intensive games with very little plot and depth.

Sad but true
by n0manarmy at 13 October, 2006 - 5:20 AM
Some of you might remember a while ago when i was discussing about getting a blog site up and running about baltimore and all its crazy nutty antics? Well I finally got the site, blogbaltimore.com, except i've got another problem. I don't "really" know how to blog. I mean i could write crap whenever i feel like but are there guidelines on how to be an effective blogger? Rules? Regulations?

Baltimore Blog
by n0manarmy at 30 July, 2006 - 3:03 PM
I'm moving into downtown baltimore some time in september with dan and company. I was thinking that this would be a good time to set up a site just for random bloggings of all the zany ass stuff that i see around baltimore and with living there i'm sure i'll see even more.

Do you think anyone else would have any interests in doing this as well or should i skip the whole idea of trying to find a domain name and setting up my own public site and go to one of the thousands of blog sites out there.

Neverwinter Nights
by n0manarmy at 26 October, 2004 - 12:08 PM
For all you old school AOL junkies you might remember a game called Neverwinter Nights. It sucked tons of hours and cash out of AOL members to provide one of the very first graphical multiplayer online game experiences.

I've recently found a remake of this game that has a very dedicated staff and they are doing an awesome job of taking the old and making it so much better.

If you’re familiar with what I'm talking about and miss the old days then check out http://www.forgottenworld.com and relive the old days.

If you want to see what was considered the grass roots of graphical online games and see what was really involved with "playing with others" check it out as well. See you all online as Penn

Ben + Somethingawful.com = (Need a user name)
by n0manarmy at 30 August, 2004 - 1:21 PM
Since Ben wouldn't provide me with a username of his choice, it makes it very hard for me to buy him a Somethingawful.com account...Sooo, I'm leaving it up to the masses to decide on what he should use. Granted this name can be funny, demeaning (be nice), or straight out weird and they'll take it.

Fire away!

I need a mud/mmorpg or something that will keep me entertained
by n0manarmy at 20 April, 2004 - 4:56 AM
I'm runnin a wonderul multi OC3 at my new jobby job (University of Maryland, Baltimore) and i needs a good mud/mmorpg to keep me amused for a long time. Something that involves progression and i can either play for a few minutes or kill a few hours on. My PC's not the greatest, only a P4 2GHZ with 384mb of memory. I'll take what ever suggestions anyone has.

I'm currently trying out Fedual Realms but i can't find anything to kill mame or murder...which makes a mud a tad boring.
