So I was wandering around Arundel Mills mall when I came to a kiosk selling imported toys from Japan. I saw a Masterpiece Optimus Prime for $160 (I'd bought one previously for an even $100), but then I saw some World's Smallest Transformers. Pretty much exactly like the toys from the '80s (and being reissued today as collectors' items), except that they're about the size of, oh, my thumb. Or smaller. Kitchy.
I bought 4 @ $8.00 a pop.
They're packaged so that you don't know which figure you're buying, which leads to one having a hunter's mentality...some figures are 1:4 ratio (Optimus Prime, etc). Some are 1:48...why, oh why, out of my four, did I pull THREE Optimuseseses....????!!! Still, they're cute.

To cap off a baseball-themed week (if you like, take a look at the salient points of my trip to the Hall of Fame), I contributed to the delinquency of this scoundrel by picking up his book today.

So my property managers have decided to beautify my rather humble apartment complex (think of it as grad school slum sector, although I'm no longer in school). First they throw up ugly vinyl siding, destroying a bird's nest which had decorated the entrances to my flat for three years. Fine...no more bird shit on the welcome mat, or dead hatchlings, I can handle that, although I miss the inane chatter of the birds. Then they decide to throw in a new concrete walkway (the old one was beat all to hell), tearing up the pitiful grassy mound in front of my abode...I can handle that too. I noticed today that the concrete was not quite set...so I did what every red-blooded American would do with this tabula rasa...:
I drew a pentagram on it!!!
God my life is boring...

Yes...I'm now more than halfway through my latest vacation. accomplished quite a bit...for once. Will feel good to go to one of B-more's many ethnic festivals this weekend (I think there's a Polish one in Patterson Park, and the Greek one in greektown). Having gone through another period of worklessness I'm glad to see I still have a job, and I cringe at the thought of how many f*ck-ups I'll have to correct when I get back.
One of my work buddies asked me what to do with two things I normally take care of while working. I said, 'do them'. The fact that this stuff went undone makes me uncomfortable with my coworkers' collective proactivity (or lack thereof). Knowing that I'm directly responsible for their training and, to a lesser extent, their on-the-job performance...I can't help feeling just a little worried. Then again, if they did a stellar job (during an easy week), then what am I really doing there, other than soaking up income? Maybe that's the point...

Here I am in my phat Arbutus bachelor pad...preparing a nice dinner of greek salad and spanakopita (greek spinach pie), in anticipation of a meeting which will not happen. My presumed dinner partner is feeling unwell, leaving me to make the phat grub for which some people know me. That's just as well...good cooking has merits of its own.
Now I can start fires again!!!!

Anyone else care that the Orioles are (yet again) over .500? How the mighty have fallen indeed if such a show of mediocrity is worthy of praise. I still support my birdz, though...

Yes...I'm a sucker. A sucker for old skool 1980s morality-free shoot 'em up after school cartoons (ok, just the Transformers, but I loved that more than I love most things). I learned that it was perfectly fine to go blow something away if it wasn't on my team (with really bad aim, but I digress). I learned how to sink $.75 a month, then $1...then eventually $1.50 into advertising rags thinly disguised as comic books. Optimus Prime is the one 1980s figure upon whom I've based a lot more of my thinking and being than I should probably admit (especially since he had a knack for getting killed and wasn't much of a military leader).
So should I be disturbed if I see my old friends (some would say my only lifelong friend) decorating the cover of a $5.25 comic book...and not even one with a story, just a bunch of cool art and character profiles? I still bought the book, but I feel...dirty.

dropped in on a lady friend of mine yesterday with the intention of taking her out and showing her a good time (she's depressed). all well and good, but she tells me she's being picked up by someone after work. that's fine...until I discover that the person she's meeting is a gentleman against whom she'd taken a restraining order a month before, forbidding contact of any kind. she tells me the story later because I left her place of work in a huff...apparently this joker got in touch with her, asking if she wanted to do something, and she just said "OK". aside from the fact that I'm concerned about her safety, I was thunderstruck by the sheer lack of any kind of sense or good judgment shown by this friend. made me wonder if this was her way of getting me back for not seducing her....I guess that shows me I shouldn't interfere in the affairs of someone taking antidepressants and lithium...
